Title: Why Discrete Math, Logic, and Proofs

1
Why Discrete Math, Logic, and Proofs?
  • Discrete math is what computers do.
  • Computers can also do logic (if the idiot
    programming them is logical).
  • Items from discrete math and number theory are
the foundation of several areas of computer
science (e.g., graph theory, networking, computer
    graphics, optimization theory, etc., etc.).
  • Proofs and theorems based on discrete math and
number theory tell you what you can and cannot
compute and how long it will take (how complex).
  • You can learn the lingo so you can read papers,
take further courses, and know what they are
    talking about.
  • There are many applications (Boolean searches,
    database structure and queries, etc.)

2
More Why
  • There are even more applications symbolic
    programming (Matlab, Mathematica), computational
    modeling, etc.
  • Its required. Its part of what everybody who
gets a computer science degree (at least from a
    reputable place) learns.
  • Its intellectually stimulating!
