EPoSS European Technology Platform on Smart
Systems Integration

Pro NMS Workshop 23 February 2007
2
Objectives of European Technology Platforms
Develop long term vision
Address challenges
Define research policy
Improve funding
Leverage technology investment
A framework for stakeholders engaged in a
specific field of technology, led, organized and
promoted by industry
A community to bring together all stakeholders
(research, industry, regulators, policy makers),
thus optimizing fragmented efforts
Define research and development priorities and
action plans on strategically important issues to
stimulate investment in RTD
A place to find partners for future projects and
help to secure the critical mass for projects
in the European context
Participation can help to improve success of FP7
project proposals
Open to all interested parties
Active participation is crucial!
ETPs are important in all areas where RTD plays a
vital role!

Smart Systems Integration The Basis for Future
Products
  • Smart Systems
  • are able to diagnose a situation, describe it and
    qualify it,
  • mutually address and identify each other,
  • are predictive,
  • are able to decide and help to decide,
  • enable the product to interact with the
    environment.
  • They are miniaturised, networked, energy
    autonomous and highly reliable.

Smart RFID
Smart Antenna
Smart car
7
The EPoSS Approach
From the Product to the System Technologies
Integration Bridging the gap in the value
chain Contributing to the objectives of the
application focused ETPs
8
Systems and Integration Approach
Bridging the gap from the component to the product
Integration at systems level realisation of
miniaturised systems
Integrated design and manufacturing
Integration into the macro-system
Integration into the application environment
Multidisciplianrity
  • Combining of optics, mechanics, electronics,
    fluidics,thermo-dynamics, chemistry, biology
  • Converging technologies Micro, Nano, Bio, Info,
    Cogno
  • Using a variety of materials silicon and non
    silicon, SiC, alternatives (e.g. polymers,
    ceramics, powders etc.)
  • Monolithic, hybrid, multi-chip, wafer level and
    other techniques

9
EPoSS Objectives
  • Creating a basis for a sustainable representation
of industry interests in EU RD policy
  • Increasing the existing EU budget for Micro-/Nano
    Integration and
  • Determining the future path of MST towards Smart
    Systems Integration
  • Preparing projects for the VII. Framework
    Programme
  • Defining further actions beside and beyond the
    Framework Programme
