HVAC
  • By Kelly Van Caeyzeele

2
What is HVAC ?
  • HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air
    conditioning.
  • HVAC systems help to control the temperature in
your house. Whether it be keeping you warm on a
cold winter night or keeping you cool in the
midst of a summer heat wave.

3
Roof Top HVAC
  • Rooftops are an ever popular way of providing
heating and cooling to many businesss these days
as they take up unused space on top of commercial
    buildings.

4
Under Floor Heating
  • Under floor heating is becoming an ever popular
way of heating single rooms or entire houses.
  • Under floor heating works on the principle that
hot air rises and by having it on the lowest part
of the room it rises evenly across the entire
room providing an efficient way to heat any home
    or business.
  • Also you dont get that horrible feeling of
waking up in the morning to an ice cold floor.

5
Geothermal Heating
  • Benefits to the Commercial Institutional Sector
  • The energy used by the commercial sector accounts
for about 13 of total energy demand in Canada,
and about the same amount of greenhouse gas
    emissions from secondary energy use.
  • In commercial buildings, more than half the
energy used is for space heating. The high demand
    for space conditioning means that
    commercial/institutional facilities could
    significantly reduce their greenhouse gas
emissions by using renewable energy sources
instead of the carbon-intensive fuels required by
conventional systems, and by improving energy
efficiency to reduce their overall energy use.
  • Geothermal heating is one of the most efficient
ways to heat a building, but it has high initial
costs for drilling the wells deep enough into the
earth to take advantage of the earth's
temperature. It also has ongoing costs for the
electricity to power the pump and heat pump
    compressor.

6
What is Geothermal Heating and Cooling?
  • Geothermal Heating is a method of heating and
cooling a building using underground heat.
  • Benefits to the Residential Sector
  • Residential heating and cooling needs in Manitoba
are mainly met by either natural gas or
    electricity.
  • Geothermal heat pumps are one of the most
    environmentally beneficial heating systems
available. These systems offer homeowners the
opportunity to significantly reduce their heating
    costs.
  • Manitoba Hydro has lunched a Geothermal Heat Pump
Program to make this renewable energy technology
    more accessible to Manitoba homeowners.

Solar Heating
  • Solar heating is a style of building construction
which uses the energy of sun light to provide
    heat in a structure.
  • Active solar heating uses pumps which move air or
a liquid from the solar collector into the
    building or storage area.
  • Passive solar heating relies on the design and
structure of the house to collect, store and
distribute heat throughout the building. The rays
of the sun fall onto a masonry wall, for example,
during the daytime and the wall radiates heat in
the evening. A well designed adobe house will use
principles of passive solar heating to heat the
    house.
  • In Manitoba Solar heating is used for everything
from heating your house to heating swimming
    pools.

8
Controllers
  • Controllers are becoming more And more
    sophisticated as technology progresses.
  • Most are now digital and can be set to lower the
temperature while you are gone to conserve energy
and warm the house before you return.

9
Solar Controllers
  • The Solar Controller is the brain of our solar
    system.
  • The controller monitors the temperature in the
solar collector located on the roof and also the
temperature in the water cylinder or in the
    swimming pool.
  • During the night the collector will not collect
any energy so the controller will switch the
    circulation pump off.
  • As the sun rises the collector will warm, as soon
as the controller senses that the collector is 6
higher in temperature than the water in the tank,
the controller starts the solar pump, which
transfers the heat to the cylinder or swimming
    pool.
  • Some of the controllers we use can also store and
output data to a computer or digital display.

Whats new and available to people in Manitoba?
  • Earth Power program with Manitoba Hydro
    (Geothermal)
  • Solar Heating - Available everywhere from
    Wal-Mart to EBay.
  • Floor heating - About 190 businesses in and
around Winnipeg, MB involved with floor heating.
