Title: Gastric Bypass Surgery

1
Gastric Bypass Surgery
  • By Amy Smith, Erin Bloomfield, Ashley Coleman,
    Sean Beitey

2
SurgicalProcedure
  • The stomach is made smaller by creating a small
pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical
    staples.
  • The smaller stomach is connected directly to the
middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum),
bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper
portion of the small intestine (duodenum).

3
How Does It Contribute To Weight Loss?
  • People feel full more quickly than when their
    stomach was its original size.
  • This reduces the
  • amount of food they
  • eat, and thus
  • reduces the amount
  • of calories consumed.

4
Dumping Syndrome
  • This occurs when food moves too quickly through
    the stomach and intestines.
  • It can cause heart palpitations (Rapid HR),
    nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, and
    possible diarrhea soon after eating.
  • These symptoms are made worse by eating highly
    refined, high-calorie foods (like sweets).
  • In some cases, the person may become so weak that
they have to lie down for 30-60 minutes.

5
So what the heck is going on?
  • Too much food, sugary food, or liquid taken with
meal cause food to shoot through the stomach
    into the intestines
  • Osmotic overload brings fluid into the lumen of
    small intestine
  • resulting in cramping,
  • bloating, gas, and
  • diarrhea

6
What the heck (cont).
  • Vasodilatation causes hypovolemia to occur
  • There is an exaggerated insulin and GLP-1 release
    (Glucagon-like Peptide)
  • enhances insulin secretion, even when glucose is
    low
  • inhibits glucagon secretion (negative feedback)
  • causes hypoglycemia which leads to weakness
  • GLP-1 elicits activation
  • of sympathetic outflow
  • (Vagus nerve stimulation).

7
Analogy
  • Seattle Traffic
  • Its stopped except the car pool lane so you
decide to give into temptation (your all alone).
You swiftly move past all the slow moving
traffic, BUT Amy uses her cell phone to rat on
    you.
  • Next thing you know
  • Johnny Law is
  • pulling you over,
  • writing you a ticket,
  • and ruining your day
