were very valuable.

them back in England. Once in a while they would
compete by seeing who can get the most furs.

7What are Voyageurs?
Because of the effectiveness of voyageurs,
the NWC was able to challenge the HBC. The HBC
started hiring their own voyageurs in 1815 to
help them compete with the NWC. Voyageurs A
woodsman, boatman, or guide employed by a fur
company to transport goods and supplies between
remote stations in Canada or the U.S. Northwest.
8Why was alcohol a bad part of the trade for the
Indians?
- In a lot of Indian tribes alcohol was an
devastating and bad part of the trade. The
Indians got violent and drunk. For other people
it was an important part of the trade.
9What did they offer to the Iroquois?
- Fur traders offered the Iroquois trade goods
which included iron tomahawks, knives, axes,
awls, fish hooks, cloth of various colors, woolen
blankets, linen shirts, brass kettles, silver
jewelry, assorted glass beads, guns and powder.

- While there were honest traders who dealt
fairly with the Iroquois, too many greedy, bad
men in the trade cheated and exploited them.
