• They provide a gear reduction in motorized
  equipment
• To reverse the direction of rotation
• To increase or decrease the speed of rotation
• To move rotational motion to a different axis
• To keep the rotation of two axes synchronized

• The gear ratio is determined by the distances
  from the center of the gear to the point of
  contact
• Many modern gears use a special tooth profile
  called an involute
• The pitch diameter is the effective contact
  diameter
• An involute profile gear tooth produces a
