• A slaved compass system supplies heading
  information to the heading reference systems on
  the flight deck.
• It eliminates the need to manually transfer
  heading information from the compass to the
  directional gyro.
• This heading information is gathered by a
  magnetic field sensing device located in the wing
  or tail of the aircraft, so it remains shielded
  from aircraft electrical equipment.

THE FLUX-VALVE

• A flux-valve is the magnetic field sensing device
  at the heart of a slaved compass system.
• It senses the earths magnetic field (lines of
  flux) and the change in aircraft position
  relative to this field.
• It is constructed with three legs spaced 120
  apart with primary coil winding around the core.
• Any change in attitude can affect the accuracy of
  the flux-valve. This is compensated for by using
  a pendulous mounting system or a vertical gyro.
