6Briefly state the basic facts about the first
miracle
Lk 201-8 - One day as he was teaching the people
in the temple courts and preaching the gospel,
the chief priests and the teachers of the law,
together with the elders, came up to him. "Tell
us by what authority you are doing these things,"
they said. "Who gave you this authority?" He
re-plied, "I will also ask you a ques-tion. Tell
me, John's baptism-was it from heaven, or from
men?" They discussed it among them-selves and
said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask,
'Why didn't you believe him?' But if we say,
'From men,' all the people will stone us, because
they are per-suaded that John was a prophet." So
they answered, "We don't know where it was from.
Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what
authority I am doing these things."

Verses
13-22 Since the
people had to buy
animals in order to offer sac-
rifices, why was Jesus so upset here?
Why do you think Mary said anything to Jesus
about the shortage problem (v.3)
Thought He could do something about it? She had
some idea of His powers?
Read 76,8,30 820 1223,27 131 171 and
interpret what mine hour was.
Cf. v. 16 with Mt. 2113 on the purpose of the
temple
How do you explain His reply in v.4?
Refers to the hour of revealing Himself as the
Christwhen Hes ready to go public with His
claims.
Why doing this? What am I going to do with
you?! Please dont involve me! (?)
My house shall be called a house of prayer
Some startling events occurred in Cana
Jerusalem yesterday
V. 18 the Jews challenge
Now about Jesus familysome teach Mary never had
any other children but remained a virgin forever.
Compare Matt. 1246 1355 and tell what
conclusions you reach.
We want to see your credentials! cf. Lk. 201-8
Some startling events occurred in Cana

Mary had other children his mother and
brethren James, Joseph, Simon, Judas, and
sisters
V. 19 Jesus answer
Destroy this temple I will raise it in 3 days
V. 20 Jews reaction
46 years!...3 days?!
Compare verse 11 with 2030-31 and explain how
this miracle relates to Johns purpose for
writing this book.
The 1st one chosen in Johns list of signs
belief life, 1st Jesus actually did.
V. 21 The true meaning
Speaking of His own body
V. 22 is strange! Read it then read Matt.
1238-40 1621 179 now read John 209
finally, read Matt. 2762-64. Write down your
observations.
What does this miracle prove about Jesus?
Tried to make it clear that He was to be raised
on 3rd day. The enemies didnt understand, but
His disciples didnt either, until after it
happened.
His power over nature time Confirms His
claim in 13
How would you analyze the faith of the people
in verses 23-25, WHY?
Superficialrested only in the sign did not
extend to a full acceptance of His claims
commands
Based on 2030-31, what do you learn about Jesus
in chapter 2?
Something of His power that He had His own plan
re public displays of His power authority
721-7 - On the third day a wedding took place at
Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and
Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to
the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus'
mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus
replied. "My time has not yet come." His mother
said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used
by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding
from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the
servants, "Fill the jars with water" so they
filled them to the brim.
Many assume it involved a relative of Jesus
that Mary was helping, perhaps in charge of the
wine, because of the authority she showed over
the servants the way she involved Jesus.

Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to
the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus'

Dont know how much she understood re Jesus
powersknew He was extraordinary because of the
virgin birth, angels words, the incident at the
temple (Lk. 251), but He had lived 30 yrs
never performed a miracle. She probably also
knew of what happened at His baptism, of what
John the baptist said of Him.
She may have trying to force His hand to get Him
t o manifest Himself to the public, as His
brothers did in 71-6.
821-7 - On the third day a wedding took place at

Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to
the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus'
mother said to him, "They have no more wine."

If she was pushing Him to go public, He may be
saying Dont try to force me into the
spotlight it isnt your place to set the hour of
my manifestation. Perhaps this shows a clear
break from her motherly authority cf. Matt.
1246-50
While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his
mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to
speak to him. Someone told him, "Your mother and
brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak
to you." He replied to him, "Who is my mother,
and who are my brothers?" Pointing to his
disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my
brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father
in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.
921-7 - On the third day a wedding took place at

Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to
the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus'
mother said to him, "They have no more wine."

hour/time of a public manifestation, or of the
complete revelation of being the Messiah,
76 - The right time for me has not yet come for
you any time is right. 78 - I am not yet going
up to this Feast, because for me the right time
has not yet come. 730 - At this they tried to
seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because
his time had not yet come. 820 - no one
seized him, because his time had not yet come.
1223 - The hour has come for the Son of Man to
be glorified. 1227 - Now my heart is troubled,
and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this
hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to
this hour. 131 - It was just before the
Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come
for him to leave this world and go to the Father.
171 - he looked toward heaven and prayed
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son,
that your Son may glorify you.
1021-7 - On the third day a wedding took place at
Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and
Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to
the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus'
mother said to him, "They have no more wine."

Probably refers to their oral traditions/law re
washing hands, pots, etc., as seen in Mk. 73-4
(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless
they give their hands a ceremonial washing,
holding to the tradition of the elders. When
they come from the marketplace they do not eat
unless they wash. And they observe many other
traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers
and kettles.)
1128-11 - And He said to them, "Draw some out now
and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it
to him. When the headwaiter tasted the water
which had become wine, and did not know where it
came from (but the servants who had drawn the
water knew), the head-waiter called the
bridegroom, and said to him, "Every man serves
the good wine first, and when the people have
drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine but
you have kept the good wine until now." This
beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of
Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His
disciples believed in Him.
Wine is created from grape juice, yeast, sugar
reacting to each other over timefrom a few
months up to a year Jesus had none of those, so
how did he create wine from nothing but water,
do so instantly?
28-11 - And He said to them, "Draw some out now
and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it

A common practice after some time, the sense of
taste is dulled and cant readily distinguish the
exact quality of the wine, so the poorer quality
( cheaper) is served when they cant tell the
difference. The key here, though, is that the
quality was so superior that it was easily
detected even by dulled taste buds.
Power over the elements processes of nature,
time, etc. The disciples believe only they knew
what had happened, so it was not a public
statement of His power.
12212-17 - After this he went down to Capernaum
with his mother and brothers and his disciples.
There they stayed for a few days. When it was
almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went
up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found
men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others
sit-ting at tables exchanging money. So he made a
whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple
area, both sheep and cattle he scattered the
coins of the money changers and overturned their
tables. To those who sold doves he said, "Get
these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's
house into a market!" His disciples remembered
that it is written "Zeal for your house will
consume me."
The Jews had degraded Gods temple into nothing
more than a market place had made worship in
the temple more into a means of making money than
a meaningful relationship between man and God.
His cleansing was a protest against this
commercialization of worship.
A 2nd temple-cleansing is recorded in Matt.
2112ff, Mk. 1115-17, after His triumphal
entry into Jerusalem
13218-22 - Then the Jews demanded of him, "What
miraculous sign can you show us to prove your
authority to do all this?" Jesus answered them,
"Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again
in three days." The Jews replied, "It has taken
forty-six years to build this temple, and you are
going to raise it in three days?" But the temple
he had spoken of was his body. After he was
raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what
he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and
the words that Jesus had spoken.
Show us your credentials! Give us proof of
your authority!
Challenged them with a confusing, maddening
statementno attempt to explain it to them.
He was predicting His resurrection, as in Rom.
13 -4 - regarding his Son, who as to his human
nature was a descendant of David, and who through
the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to
be the Son of God by his resurrection from the
dead Jesus Christ our Lord.
14218-22 - Then the Jews demanded of him, "What
miraculous sign can you show us to prove your
authority to do all this?" Jesus answered them,
"Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again
in three days." The Jews replied, "It has taken
forty-six years to build this temple, and you are
going to raise it in three days?" But the temple
he had spoken of was his body. After he was
raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what
he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and
the words that Jesus had spoken.
Disciples didnt understand until after the fact
Mt 1239-40 - A wicked and adulterous genera-tion
asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be
given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in
the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will
be three days and three nights in the heart of
the earth. Mt 1621 - From that time on Jesus
began to explain to his disciples that he must go
to Jeru-salem and suffer many things at the hands
of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the
law, and that he must be killed and on the third
day be raised to life. Mt 179 - As they were
coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them,
"Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the
Son of Man has been raised from the dead." Jn
208-9 - the other disciple, who had reached the
tomb first, also went inside. He saw and
believed. (They still did not understand from
Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
15218-22 - Then the Jews demanded of him, "What
miraculous sign can you show us to prove your
authority to do all this?" Jesus answered them,
"Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again
in three days." The Jews replied, "It has taken
forty-six years to build this temple, and you are
going to raise it in three days?" But the temple
he had spoken of was his body. After he was
raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what
he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and
the words that Jesus had spoken.
Although the disciples didnt understand it,
some of the Jewish leaders did Mt. 2762-64
the chief priests and the Pharisees went to
Pilate. "Sir," they said, "we remember that while
he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After
three days I will rise again.' So give the order
for the tomb to be made secure until the third
day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal
the body and tell the people that he has been
raised from the dead. This last deception will be
worse than the first."
16223-25 - Now when He was in Jerusalem at the
Passover, during the feast, many believed in His
name, observing His signs which He was doing.
But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting
Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because
He did not need anyone to testify concerning man,
for He Himself knew what was in man.
223-25 - Now when He was in Jerusalem at the
Passover, during the feast, many believed in His
name, observing His signs which He was doing.
But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting
Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because
He did not need anyone to testify concerning man,
for He Himself knew what was in man.
Many believed He could do signs but did not
understand what those fully signs signified about
Him. Their faith was superficial immature.
He stayed aloof from their miscon-ceptions of His
kingship from their designs for Him. Although
the people did not understand Jesus, he
completely understood them, the human psyche, and
the shallow nature of their belief.
17v. 4 It was a serious question. Nicodemus was
thinking as a Jew, based on the Law of Moses.
With that in mind, explain why he asked it.
As a Jewish Law expert, familiar with Lev.81-9
Num.85-7 197-8,19 how would Nicodemus
interpret born of water?
Born of the Spirit study Titus 31-7
Gal.519-24 Rom.87-11 and see if you can
explain what this expression might mean.
Your explanation of what it means to be born of
both water and spirit is . . .
18God so loved the world, that He gave His only
begotten son, that whoever believes in Him shall
not perish, but have eternal life. 316
I have come that they may have life, and have it
abundantly. 1010
