  • 5 aspects
  • search information on the internet,
  • evaluate the information,
  • write an essay and evaluation report,
  • construct web pages.
  • cooperate with others to create a joint web page.

Whats involved?
  • select tutorial group topic with your tutor, eg.
    The physiology of skin,
  • each group member focuses on a different aspect
    of the topic, eg. structure and function,
    ectoparasites, physiological disorders, genetic
    disorders, artificial skin etc,
  • use search engines to find 5 suitable web pages
    to collect information about your topic.

Whats required?
  • Write an essay of about 1000 words (50),
  • write an evaluation of your 5 web pages of about
    500 words (20),
  • complete 2 internet evaluation quizzes and
    print-out results (10),
  • produce a copy of your individual web page (10),
  • group to cooperate to write a group web page,
    with links to each members web page (10).

DEFINITIONS
  • HTML (HyperText Markup Language) - the universal
    programming language of the web.
  • URL (Universal resource Locator) - the internet
    address of a web page. Contains 3 parts
  • Protocol - usually http//
  • Host name - server where a web page is located,
    eg. www.uel.ac.uk
  • File path - place where web page is located on
    server, eg. /your name

SEARCHING with SEARCH ENGINES
  • Refer to handout from MPA100 workshop.
  • BE SPECIFIC when using keywords (eg. skin could
    mean the surface of an aircraft). Use human
    skin, animal skin etc.
  • USE BOOLEAN TERMS
  • eg. Depending on the search engine, use AND or OR
    between keywords to include web pages only with
    BOTH words or only ONE, eg. human AND skin, human
    OR animal.

EVALUATING A WEB PAGE
  • Author - any details of expertise, ways to
    contact them?
  • Publisher (organisation to which author belongs -
    see host name) - a creditable organisation, a
    personal web page, a charity, religious, pressure
    group?
  • Validity of information - facts or opinion?
    Based on experiments or published information?
    References via reference list or links?
  • Currency - date/update given? references dated?

  • American Psychological Association (APA)
    (scientific) style
  • Author/editor. (Year). Title (edition), Type of
    medium. Producer (optional). Available Protocol
    (if applicable) Site/Path/File Access date.
