  blindness in people of working age
• Progression of retinopathy is associated with
  severity and length of hyperglycaemia
• High sugar levels can cause problems to the eyes
  blood vessels and nerves

• Picks up problems early
• Can save vision by directing early treatment

Retinal Screening

• National programme for diabetic retinopathy
  screening
• Target set of having 80 of people with diabetes
  screened by 2006
• 100 coverage by 2007

Retinal Screening

• Started in Shetland in Aug 2005
• Camera housed in outpatients
• Images taken sent to Aberdeen
• Images viewed by screeners
• Report generated to GP/ Consultant/ Patient
• Referral mechanism in place to deal with ant
  problems
