Her childhood
  • Born July 19th, 1921 in Bronx, New York
  • Raised in New York and lived there until current
    day
  • Says that she was a very stubborn child that was
    always very willing to learn and go to school
  • Began to read before she was in kindergarten

Her Early Education
  • When she was in 7th grade, she was committed to
    mathematics.
  • Later the concepts of chemistry fascinated her
    when introduced by her high school teacher, Mr.
    Mondzak
  • After finishing high school, she moved on to go
    to Hunter College

Hunter College
  • Rosalyn was taught physics by Professors Herbert
    N. Otis and Duane Roller.
  • The concepts of nuclear physics intrigued her the
    others surrounding her.
  • She attended the colloquium given by Enrico Fermi
    about the newly discovered nuclear
    fissionlearned about its good and bad uses

Her Journey to Graduate School
  • Began typing for a leading biochemist, Dr. Rudolf
    Schoenheimer
  • In February of 1941 she became a teaching
    assistant at the University of Illinois.
  • On becoming a teaching assistant, she quit being
    a secretary and took two tuition-free physics
    courses at NYU
  • She became the first woman on the faculty since
    1917

At Graduate School
  • On her first day, she met her future husband,
    Aaron Yalow.
  • Took very hard academic classes during the day
    and at night, but still made straight As
  • Her marriage and the attack on Pearl Harbor
    marked the start of her research. She went to
    Hunter college again to teach physics to
    returning veterans. She was now full-time.

Her Home Life
  • She later quit teaching and began researching
    with Dr. Soloman A. Berson.
  • She had two kids,Benjamin and Elanna.
  • A house in Riverdalegot sleep-in help and
    part-time help in raising the kids.
  • Benjamin is currently 25 and Elanna is now 23,
    both very accomplished

What did Rosalyn Yalow do?
  • American medical physicist who helped develop the
    testing technique called radioimmunoassay.
  • RIA Is a method of protein analysis and is used
    to detect interactions between foreign protein
    and complex protein.

The RIA technique
  • developed the RIA technique for
    determining/measuring the quantity of small
    amounts of biological substances in body fluids
    using radioactively labeled materials
  • wide application in medicine
  • (received Nobel Prize in medicine for this work)
  • she has angered feminist and confronted the
    public panic about radiation
  • the RIA technique can measure very very small
    amounts of hormones and enzymes that the Nobel
    Prize committee compared it to detecting ½ cube
    of sugar dissolved in a 3600 sq. mile lake 1 foot
    deep
