Background to the work
  • Representative teachers worked on creating a new
    K-5 curriculum from the GEs
  • Unpacking and giving examples
  • 04/05 and 05/06 school years
  • K- 5 continuum, WELL defined
  • Partially supported through the VMP grant

06/07 school year
  • Was GOING to be focused on assessment- NCLB
  • Math Committee- Stipend (grant)
  • At least one teacher rep from each school and
    from every grade level 2 math Specialists (at
    least 4 VMIs)
  • Met 2 times a month for 2 hours
  • Consult with Doug Harris
  • Core program district wide core assessment
  • Different programs separate assessment systems

  • Borrowed and tweaked

Piloting
  • Used the old Investigations as a way to calibrate
    committee members on the criteria
  • Put the Addison Wesley through our criteria
    test and it did NOT pass
  • Ended up piloting New Investigations and Bridges
  • Math Committee members took a first stab over
    view look at both programs.
  • Visits from reps from both programs
  • Program show and tells at each school and
    feedback invited from all
  • Materials left in staff room of each school for
    individuals to preview

    unit, or one component with the agreement they
    would fill out feedback forms
  • Bridges first then packed away then
    Investigations
  • Many teachers went back to Bridges after
    Investigations pilot was done

  • Criteria
  • 1 to 5 scale
  • 27 criteria score points
  • Data was reported as percentage of responses at 4
    or 5
  • Bridges
  • 3 of the 27 score points were below 70 (only 1
    below 50)
  • 21 of the 27 were above 85 (6 were at 100)
  • Investigations
  • NONE of the score points scored higher than 50
  • Only 9 scored higher than 35

Recommendation
  • Math Committee wrote reports with data to support
    our recommendation along with suggested supports
    to implement
  • Steering Committee reviewed
  • Curriculum Director made final decision
  • Report was shared with all 3 staffs and then
    posted on web for public/community to review
