Mission Statement
  • The mission of Aurora Alternative High School is
to provide a positive, meaningful learning
experience for students who have not been
successful in traditional school settings. We
are committed to providing a learning experience
    that is academically comprehensive, educationally
sensitive to the varied learning styles of all
students, emotionally and socially nurturing to
all participants in the learning process, in an
environment conducive to safe and supportive
    learning.

6
School Size
  • Aurora Alternative High School is home to about
    100 students grades 9-12.
  • Average class size is limited to 15 students to
    assure more individual teacher-student contact.
  • The small size of the school encourages a feeling
of belonging in students and staff.

7
School Day
  • Students attend from 800 AM through 1230 PM
with two 10 minute breaks, but no passing
    periods.
  • The typical school day has 250 instructional
    minutes.
  • The staff is available until 315 for individual
    instruction.

8
School Contract
  • Each academic quarter students read and sign an
enrollment contract that has the following
    conditions.

9
Respect
  • The student will treat all members of the Aurora
    community with respect.
  • The student should not interfere with the
    learning of others.
  • Stealing, cheating, and other forms of dishonesty
    are not tolerated.

10
Attendance
  • We expect students to make every effort attend
    school every day.
  • Students who exceed 5 absences in any class in an
academic quarter may be dropped from enrollment.

11
Alcohol and Other Drugs
  • The student is expected to come to school each
day ready to learn. This means they should not
be under the influence of alcohol or any other
drug except those prescribed by a physician
    during the school day.

12
Academic Progress
  • Students are expected to make progress toward
their diploma each quarter they are enrolled.
  • Students who fail a class may be dropped from
    enrollment.

13
Visiting Other MCCSC Schools
  • Aurora students are not to visit other MCCSC
Schools before 3 PM each academic day. You are
allowed to attend sporting events or other after
school functions, but remember you are an
ambassador of Aurora at these events.

14
Fighting
  • Fighting on or within two blocks of school will
result in the immediate dismissal of all parties
involved, with no appeal. Students encouraging
fighting will be judged just as guilty as those
    physically involved.

15
Appeal Boards
  • Students who violate rules 1-5 of the student
contract will go before an appeal board of three
students and two staff members. The student will
present reasons for their inability to meet the
contract. The appeal board will then make
recommendation to the principal regarding the
    future of the student.

16
Staff Reviews
  • Students who have been placed on academic
probation by an appeal board and continue to
violate the contract go before the staff to
explain their inability to meet the contract.
The staff then makes recommendations to the
principal regarding the future of the student.

17
School Curriculum
  • Aurora offers students the opportunity to
complete the Core 40 courses mandated by the
State of Indiana. These courses are in the areas
of English, Math, Social Science, Science, Art,
Health, Physical Education, and School to Work.
