9Projected Decline in UK Nuclear Capacity
10Engineering Reality
Generating capacity shortfall of 7-16GW by
2015 Equivalent to about 20 of current
capacity Security of supply and long term
competitiveness of UK economy now major
issues On and offshore wind, energy efficiency,
distributed generation being pushed heavily New
nuclear now accepted as key

12Nuclear Generation in the UK
- UK has around 13 GW of nuclear capacity
- 2 twin Magnox units
- (closing by 2010)
- 7 twin AGR units
- (closing 2011 - 2023)
- 1 single PWR plant
- (closing in 2035)
13New Nuclear
- To be delivered by the private sector without any
subsidy from Government - Waste and Decommissioning fund to be agreed at
outset - UK Radwaste disposal and repository still to be
determined - BE (British Energy) became the target of interest
for overseas utilities (because of its sites) - Some NDA (Nuclear Decommissioning Authority)
sites also attractive

18UK Jobs Potential
- Around 80 of nuclear new build work is
conventional construction, not nuclear. - UK industry could supply 70-80 of the value of
a UK nuclear programme. - Less than 5 of current UK construction
resources will be required - With careful management, the necessary resources
can be recruited and trained in time - UK new build fleet can be a springboard for UK
companies in the global supply chain

19Nuclear in NW England
- A unique nuclear region
- Approx 25,000 employees (50 of UK total)
- All elements of the fuel cycle
- Strong science base (BTC, Universities and
private sector) - Contributes approx 3bn/year to the regional
economy
20Already today, Westinghouse Electric Company has
signed agreements with BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce
and Doosan Babcock to collaborate on work
associated with bringing the AP1000 nuclear power
plant to the UK and this may lead to between 70
and 80 of the work and services required to
construct the AP1000 being provided by the UK
supply chain, securing valuable jobs in Britain.
