Vital Signs Monitoring System(VSMS)
The Future of Patient-Care Technology March 29,
2002

  • Jonathan Campbell (EE)

2
Purpose/Motivation
  • To create a wireless system that fits on the
clients wrist and finger that will periodically
read the clients vital signs and transmit them to
    a central computer for monitoring.
  • The system will be used for patients in an
    intensive care and/or rehabilitation environment.
  • To create a project that would somehow make
patient care easier for doctors and nurses in a
    hospital environment.

3
Description
  • VSMS Unit
  • Fit
  • on Wrist and Finger ( wrist unit - 5x2x1.5)
  • LCD Display
  • Wireless transmitter
  • All sensors required to take proper measurements
  • Rechargeable power supply with ac adaptor
  • Water resistance to account for sweat
  • Wireless receiver
  • GUI
  • Database to store all data taken by VSMS
  • Desktop Computer

4
Sensors
  • Sensors will calculate heart rate, temperature,
    and oxygen density
  • Heart rate and Temperature will be calculated
directly on the VSMS unit while the Oxygen
density will be a finger unit. (All Measurements
    will be taken continuously)
  • Optional sensors can be added to calculate Blood
    Pressure and Muscle Tension.

5
Vital Sign Parameters
  • Temperature Normal 98.6oF
  • Out of Range if Temp lt 98.0oF or Temp gt 99.0oF
  • Heart Rate Max Heart rate 220 age.
  • Oxygen Density Normal 92
  • Out of Range if OD lt 92

6
Micro Controller
  • Calculates the necessary values such as heart
rate per minute, blood pressure, etc
  • Data will be sent to onboard memory chips for
    wireless transmission and LCD display.

7
LCD
  • LCD display will be attached to the VSMS device
to let user see his or her status.
  • Will Display all measurements taken by the
    sensors.

8
Memory
  • Memory will be used to store the measurements in
    a buffer.
  • Periodically, the transmitter will send this data
to the computer. Then the buffer is reset and
    ready for more data.

9
WirelessTransmitter
  • Onboard VSMS unit
  • Linx KH TXE 433 transmitter/encoder
  • 433 MHz Frequency
  • 300 Ft Range
  • 3V Operating Voltage
  • Dimensions 1.22L X 0.63W X 0.18H

10
WirelessDesktop Receiver
  • Linx KH-RX 433 receiver/decoder
  • 433MHz ¼ wave monopole Antenna
  • Receiver will connect to desktop computer via 9
    pin serial port
  • 2.7 to 4.2 V Operating Voltage
  • Dimensions 1.43L X 0.63W X 0.18H

11
Wireless
  • Data collected from sensors will be processed by
CPU into a Hexadecimal word that is transmitted
    to the desktop computer
  • The FCC has designated a bandwidth specifically
for Wireless Medical Telemetry Devices 608 to
    614MHz, 1395 to 1400MHz and 1429 to 1432MHz.
  • By limiting access to these frequencies, the
    amount of electromagnetic interference (EMI)
transmitted is reduced. The noise in the vital
    signs readings will be minimized.

12
GUI
  • A GUI will be made using Java, giving the program
flexibility to run on almost any platform.
  • The doctor or nurse will be alerted if the vital
signs drop or go above a set threshold.
  • The patients vital signs stored into a database
    numerically and graphically.
