What is Tele-Presence?
Tele-Presence
13
Motivation for Development
  • Concurrent research in earthquake engineering is
now conducted to a great extent between
    universities throughout the world
  • The exchange of ideas and coordination of
research would be greatly facilitated by
integrating this research into a form accessible
    by researchers everywhere
  • This project will provide such accessibility to
    advanced concepts in earthquake engineering

14
Tele-Presence Objectives
  • Build a structural model on a shaking table
  • Provide the ability to control inputs to the
    structure (e.g. earthquake excitation, damper
    force)
  • Include visual representation of the structure to
the user animation and/or video feedback
  • Make all of this available via the Internet for
use by researchers throughout the world

15
At Notre Dame
  • Preparations are underway for the launch of a
    fully functioning tele-presence web site
  • Initial site will feature
  • Shaking table experiment
  • User input and output control
  • Real-time animation and video
  • MR fluid damper technology

Future Work
  • Improve the flexibility of the current model by
    implementing more advanced features where
    possible
  • Begin to develop additional models, incorporating
other aspects of earthquake engineering and
    structural control
  • Use Weblab to apply the Simulink model to the
Internet allowing the user full control over all
    options

21
Acknowledgments
  • Special thanks to the following individuals for
their valuable contributions to this project
  • B.F. Spencer, Jr.
  • Aaron Vorwerk
  • Yong Gao
