Title: Environmentally Friendly Airport Construction Materials

1
Environmentally Friendly Airport Construction
Materials
2
Objectives
  • Research the different environmentally friendly
    construction material.
  • Investigate the environmental techniques used
prior, during and after the construction.
  • Investigate other organisations who use
    environmentally friendly materials.

3
Reusing waste material
  • Waste soil, topsoil and other aggregates
  • 300,000 tonnes of waste concrete and demolition
material from T5 crushed by a designated team and
    reused on site.
  • Biopiles used to treat the contaminated soils.
  • Excavated inert soils and clays used as backfill
    and for landscaping.
  • Multiple use of temporary works

4
  • Waste arising from road sweeping activities
  • A materials take back scheme
  • Lengths of cable too short to be of use to the
permanent systems installation team were made
available to the logistics team for use in the
    temporary systems on site.
  • Surplus paint of good quality was made available
to local community projects through the Community
    RePaint initiative.

5
Recycling Material
  • Skips were provided
  • Waste cable and plasterboard were also segregated
    for recycling
  • Overall 87 of waste was recycled.

6
Specific Recycling initiatives
  • Temporary site drainage
  • Biodegradable waste

7
Recycled
  • BAA worked hard to include material with high
recycled content in the construction of T5.
  • 80,000 tonnes of recycled and secondary
    aggregates were bought in.
  • Crushed glass from local recycling banks- site
    roads
  • Up to 30 of the concrete mix used in the
construction of buildings, taxiways and aircraft
    stands is pulverised fuel ash.

8
Benefits
  • 9,100 tonnes of co2 emissions.
  • Cost savings
  • Higher quality product

9
Contractor
  • Ethos Recycling- This waste contractor was
appointed to manage and collect all waste.
  • Remaining waste is sent for energy or landfill.
  • 43 of hazardous waste
  • Over 80 of waste, by weight, was recycled on
    site.
  • T5 achieved in excess of 97 of recycling.
  • Onsite recycling activities
  • And recycling provided by Ethos Recycling.

10
Disposing of waste
  • Two Rear End Loaders
  • One skip lorry which collected waste from across
    the site
