What is Filamentality?

• Filamentality is a fill-in-the-blank interactive
  Web site that guides you through picking a topic,
  searching the Web, gathering good Internet sites,
  and turning Web resources into activities
  appropriate for learners.
• It helps you combine the Filaments of the Web
  with a learner's mentality.

• Filamentality answers two main questions
• How do I actually use the Web in the classroom or
  library?
• How do I make Web pages and post them on the
  Internet?

What Does Filamentality Do?

• It blends your learning goals with the outrageous
  resources available on the Web.
• It guides you through the complete instructional
  design process
• selection of a topic
• gathering of Internet Sites
• creation of your very own web page

Creating a Hotlist

• The first step in using the power of the Internet
  for learning is linking to the sites that you
  find most useful. Doing this will save your
  learners hours of aimless searching (not an
  efficient use of class time).
• Example - China on the Net

Scrapbook

• If learners already have a general understanding
  of the subject they are studying you might want
  their first Web-based activity to be the
  exploration of a Multimedia Scrapbook
• Learners use the Scrapbook to find aspects of the
  broader topic that they feel are important.
• Example - Democracy Online In America Today

Treasure Hunt

• First you find Web pages that hold information
  that you feel is essential to understanding the
  given topic.
• Next you are then prompted by Filamentality to
  pose one key question for each Web resource
  you've linked to.
• Example - Black History Past to Present

Subject Sampler

• Learners are presented with a smaller number
  (maybe half a dozen) of intriguing Web sites
  organized around a main topic.
• Students are asked about their perspectives on
  topics, comparisons to experiences they have had,
  interpretations of artworks or data, etc.

WebQuest

• A WebQuest presents student groups with a
  challenging task, scenario, or problem to solve.
• Example - Look Who's Paying the Bill!

• Filamentality's been designed to be useful in a
  few main ways
• You can create a Web-based learning page that
  targets a specific kind of learning.
• You get to create Web pages without having to
  bother learning HTML.
• You get to immediately post your Web page on the
  Internet.
