tentative decision to kill Duncan the king has

also his host. The host should protect his guests
from danger, not kill them.
32 Stay, you imperfect speakers
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to the three witches (the
imperfect speakers) just before they vanish - C) Macbeth and Banquo have just heard the
witches prophecy for the first time. - D) Stop and explain yourselves. Im already the
Thane of Glamis because Sinel, my father, gave me
his rank when he died. But how could I be the
Thane of Cawdor when he is still alive?

fighters who have gathered there. - C) Duncan has just announced that Malcolm will
succeed him when the time is right. - D) Everyone should know that I plan to pass the
crown to Malcolm. - Virtually the same as c)

- A) The speaker is Lady Macbeth.
- B) Shes speaking to Macbeth.
- C) Macbeth has arrived home, and Lady Macbeth is
trying to convince him to kill Duncan. - D) Look normal if you want to fool the others.
Act friendly, say friendly things, and look
innocent but be cunning and ruthless underneath
it all.

- C) Duncan has announced that Malcolm (not

- B) Shes speaking to herself.
- C) Lady Macbeth has recently received a letter
from Macbeth about the witches prophecy. - D) Come, gods, and rid me of all traces of
feminine sweetness fill my soul with enough
evil to plan what must be done.
109 No more that Thane of Cawdor shall deceive
our bosom interest

- B) Hes speaking to Ross.
- C) The wounded officer has just given a report on
Macbeths and Banquos victories over the
rebel/Norwegian armies. - D) The Thane of Cawdor will never trick us
again. Go find Macbeth and tell him that the
Thane will be executed and that he can take his
place.
1110 Give me your hand
- A) The speaker is Duncan.
- B) Hes speaking to Lady Macbeth.
- C) Duncan has arrived at the castle, and thanks
Lady Macbeth for her hospitality she replies
that her family is deeply indebted to him, and is
therefore happy to help him. - D) Lets find Macbeth, who we both love dearly
Id like to thank him in person. Shall we go?
1211 We will proceed no further in this
business
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to Lady Macbeth.
- C) Macbeth has decided not to kill Duncan.
- D) Were not doing this. He just promoted me,
and Im already respected by many. We should
enjoy what weve just received instead of tossing
it away in pursuit of something new.
1312 Glamis thou art, and Cawdor
- A) The speaker is Lady Macbeth.
- B) Shes speaking to herself.
- C) She has just received the (previously
mentioned) letter from Macbeth. - D) My husband, youve already achieved what they
said you would, and will become king if you want
to do what is necessary. But I fear you wont
want to go that far youre too kind at heart to
be so ruthless.
141 O, proper stuff!
- A) The speaker is Lady Macbeth.
- B) Shes speaking to Macbeth.
- C) Macbeth is terrified by the sight of Banquos
ghost, which is invisible to everyone else. - D) Your fears are imaginary! This is just like
the dagger you swore you saw before you killed
Duncan.
152 The time has been that, when the brains
were out, the man would die
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes actually speaking to himself, although
Lady Macbeth is listening disgustedly. - C) Macbeth is panicking after seeing the
aforementioned ghost. - D) Men used to stay dead when you killed them.
Now they rise up, wounds and all, to torment us
while we live.
163 Thou hast it now
- A) The speaker is Banquo.
- B) Hes speaking to himself.
- C) Banquo is thinking about Macbeths recent rise
to power. - D) Everything the witches promised has come
true, Macbeth but I suspect you took matters
into your own hands.
174 I am in blood
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to Lady Macbeth.
- C) The two are evaluating the threat Macduff
potentially poses to their power. - D) Ive killed so many to get this far that I
feel like I cant stop going back is just as
hard as going forward.
185 (To leave no rubs or botches in the work)
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to the two murderers (a third
joins them later seems like things always
happen in threes) - C) Macbeth is plotting his strike against Banquo
and his line. - D) In order to complete the task, make sure you
kill Fleance as well as Banquo his removal is
just as important as his fathers death.
196 To be thus is nothing, but to be safely
thus
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to himself (his servant has just
left the room). - C) Macbeth has recently arranged a meeting with
convicted murderers the men he wants to hire to
kill Banquo and Fleance. - D) None of this is worth having if I cant enjoy
having it. Im deeply afraid of Banquo, and his
king-like streak makes him dangerous.
207 Thou art the best o th cutthroats
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to the first murderer.
- C) Banquo has been killed, but Fleance escaped
the attack. - D) You are the best killer alive, although
whoever killed Fleance is your equal. If you
killed him as well, you will have no equal.
218 We hear our bloody cousins are bestowed
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to Banquo.
- C) Macbeth has invited Banquo to dinner thus
ensuring hell be in the area when the murderers
try to find him. - D) Rumor has it that Malcolm and Donalbain are
in England and Ireland, telling lies and refusing
to confess their part in Duncans murder.
229 Better be with the dead
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to Lady Macbeth.
- C) Macbeth is bemoaning his increasing paranoia
he cant enjoy ruling because hes terrified and
guilty. - D) Its better to rest in peace than live and be
haunted by the things weve done.
2310 Then comes my fit again
- A) The speaker is Macbeth.
- B) Hes speaking to the first murderer.
- C) Macbeth has just learned that Fleance escaped
the murderers clutches. - D) My relief is gone, and replaced by old fear.
I was about to be free, but now I am a prisoner
of my doubts once more. Is Banquo truly dead?
