Reconviction rates

• Prisoners released from custody in 2002 who were
  returned to Scottish Prisons within 2 years of
  their release
• 48 return to prison within 2 years
• Decrease of 2 from those released in 2001
• Males are more likely than females to return
• (49 compared with 39)
• Young Offenders are more likely than adults to
  return
• (58 compared with 46)

Reconviction rates (contd)

• Offenders who have committed a Crime of
  Dishonesty have the highest return rates
• (68 for males, 48 for females)
• Offenders serving Life or detained under Section
  205 of the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act have
  the lowest return rate (28)
• Of those who return to prison, a half do so
  within 6 months of release (52) and
  three-quarters (76) within 12 months of release

Management of Offenders (Scot.) Act (2005)

• The primary objective of this Act is to improve
  the management of offenders through greater
  integration of the activities of criminal justice
  agencies with the ultimate aim of reducing levels
  of re-offending in Scotland.
