Proposed Jewett FutureGen Site
6- The proposed site rests just north of the town
of Jewett, extending into Leon, Limestone, and
Freestone counties. The site partially consists
of the reclaimed mining areas of the Texas
Westmoreland - Mine Co.
-
- Injection sites exist primarily within Freestone
and Anderson counties.
7The Converging ForcesBringing FutureGen to Texas
- Energy
- Demand increasing for clean energy/power,
hydrogen, national security. - Environment
- Benefits of capturing and storing CO2 a major
greenhouse gas. - Economy
- Wellhead value, taxes, natural gas prices,
infrastructure development, jobs.
8Energy
- Texas is 1 consumer of coal
- Texas is 5 producer of coal
- Texas has a 200 year supply of coal
- Texas is 1 consumer of Hydrogen
- Texas is 1 overall consumer and producer of
electricity
9Environmental Facts
- Texas emits 700 million metric tons of CO2
annually. - The U.S. emits 5,700 million metric tons
annually. - About 220 billion tons of CO2 could be stored by
filling just one percent of brine volume in
sandstones from Alabama to Mexico border
potentially offering a global solution for CO2
emissions through carbon sequestration.
10Economy
- Affordable energy is necessary for economic
development and job creation - Texas has been doing CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery
for over thirty (30) years, and has expertise and
experience in the transportation and handling of
CO2 - A CO2 pipeline network is already in place in
parts of Texas

CO2 capture is a cornerstone of FutureGen. CO2
could be used for EOR to offset development cost
and speed implementation.

13Site Attributes
14Road Access
The site is bordered by Farm Road 39, which
intersects U.S. Highway 79, 10 miles (16
kilometers) from the site boundary and State
Highway 164, 8 miles (13 kilometers) from the
boundary. It is also conveniently situated near
Interstate 45.
15Rail Lines
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway line
runs along the northern border of the proposed
Heart of Brazos (HOB) site.
16Existing Land Use
The FutureGen facility will be compatible with
existing land use.
17Water Sources.
The primary water source available to this site
is a proposed groundwater well field developed
on-site and immediately adjoining the site.
18Transmission Lines
A dual circuit 345-kV transmission line forms the
northwest boundary of the proposed site. The
interconnection will require only the
construction of a substation on the property.
19Natural Gas Pipelines
The required start-up fuel for the
coal-gasification facilities to be utilized by
the FutureGen plant at the proposed Heart of
Brazos (HOB) site will be supplied by an existing
natural gas pipeline owned and operated by Energy
Transfer Corporation that enters the site at its
northwest corner.
20Proposed Primary Injection Target
The proposed injection site is underlain by a
deep saline formation with four main injection
zones the Travis Peak Sands, The Rodessa and
Pettet lime grainstones, and the Woodbine sands
all beneath a primary seal, the Eagle Ford Shale.
21Community Participation and Support
22Community Participation
- State of Texas has authorized 20 million direct
contribution to FutureGen Alliance upon execution
of contract - Workforce development funding from national,
state, and local levels - TX Capital Fund Up to 500,000 to help pay for
water lines to site or rail spur to site
23NRG Energy donates 400-acre site adjacent to
Westmoreland mine to FutureGen Alliance. NRG
Energy offering FutureGen Alliance access to a
heliport site at their plant, adjacent to the
proposed site.
24- Texas Westmoreland contracts to provide ample
supply of lignite coal as FutureGen fuel source. - Westmoreland, working with the surrounding
counties to provide equipment to prep the site
for construction
25Community Support
- Proposed Jewett site enjoys widespread support
from elected officials in Limestone, Freestone,
Anderson, and Leon counties - County Judges Byron Ryder (Leon), Daniel Burkeen
(Limestone), and Linda Grant (Freestone), and
Linda Ray (Anderson) have directed regional
efforts to educate the community and build public
support - Local news media has done an excellent job of
educating area citizens on all aspects of
proposed FutureGen site - More than 250 area residents attended the
FutureGen Texas community briefing on June 29,
2006 in Buffalo, Texas
26Employment Opportunities
27Estimations
- 1300 skilled craftsman during peak construction
- 50-75 permanent scientific researchers
- 150 permanent workforce
28Additional Benefits
- The service field will be deeply effected by the
arrival of FutureGen. Expansion will be
necessary, which could create more jobs and
revenue for the region. - Emergency Services
- Fire
- Law enforcement
- EMS
- Visitor Accommodations
- Food Services
- Health Care Services
