• The Issue
• -Automatic drug dispensers that work like
  vending machines
• -Utilized in community health center, hospitals
  and Veterans Administration clinics

• Want to implement these machines in Boston
  medical center
• -The Process
• 1) The doctor faxes the pharmacist the
  patients prescription
• 2)The pharmacist reviews the prescription and
  sends the electronic message via a secure
  computer links to the dispensing machine
• 3)The dispensing machine encodes the message to
  dispense the appropiate drug-Bar codes
• 4) The patient receives the bottle with printed
  information of drugs side effects and warnings
• 5)The patient is asked if they would like to
  speak to the pharmacist
• -If yes, the patient is directed to telephone,
  the VA currently has video-conferencing

• Reduce error
• High volume of prescriptions
• Accelerate rate of productivity
• Relieves Pharmacist of low-impact duties
  (refilling)

• Cons
• No face-to-face interaction
• Dont reduce costs
• Teaching pharmacist 6 yrs to operate a machine
• State law require pharmacists to dispense drugs
