WHAT IS MBE(IFMBE definition)
Medical and Biological Engineering integrates
physical, mathematical and life sciences and
engineering principles for the study of biology,
medicine and health systems and for the
application of technology to improving health and
quality of life. It creates knowledge from the
molecular to organ systems levels, develops
materials, devices, systems, information
approaches, technology management, and methods
for assessment and evaluation of technology, for
the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of
disease, for health care delivery and for patient
care and rehabilitation.
An interdisciplinary field of science recognised
by ICSU

    replace existing mechanisms
  • Member of IFMBE
  • Setting it up is a process that must be carried
out in a dialogue with the representatives of the
    European MBE community

CONSTITUTION BYLAWS
  • A draft was sent out on November 11th and also
uploaded to the EAMBES web site
  • The ProTem group met Tuesday, December 3rd and
decided to propose a much simpler and more
streamlined Constitution and Bylaws for EAMBES
  • The major changes to the November 11th version
    are the following (next slide)

17
MAJOR CHANGES
  • Only one single Division of Societies with two
sections one for the national and one for the
    transeuropean societies

  • The Divisions elect the members of the Council.
There are 22 members in total on the Council.
Society Division elects 10 members. The other
    Divisions each elect four members.
  • The Council governs EAMBES and among other things
    elects the Board.
  • The running of the daily activities is carried
out by a Board of five officers.
  • The terms
  • Council members 2 years ( 1 additional term)
  • Board

BUSINESS PLAN
  • The dues paid by EAMBES members will not be able
to support the level of required activity gt
  • EAMBES has to access other sources of income
  • Additionally EAMBES will have to rely on its
membership volunteering time for the good of all
  • We have today 100 kEuro from the EU Commission to
do a cartography of MBE resources in Europe
    (CHART) in 12 months
  • Expected outcomes
  • a web-based directory of who is who in MBE in
    Europe
  • catalysing the creation of Networks of Excellence
    in MBE
  • Additional projects to be identified and
    submitted for funding in 2003

WHY BECOME A MEMBERWhat services will EAMBES
provide
  • Europe is changing. EAMBES is our vehicle to be a
participant in that process by providing inputs
    to
  • Education
  • Research funding
  • Professional standing
  • BUT
  • It will not work unless everyone participates and
enables EAMBES to represent the European MBE
    community
  • inclusiveness (weight)
  • proactive
