3
TRACKING vs TRACING
  • In defining traceability, it is important to
    distinguish between the terms
  • tracking and tracing

4
TRACKING
  • TRACKING is the capability to follow a path of a
specified unit and/or batch of product through
the supply chain as it moves between
    organizations towards the final point-of-process,
    point-of-sale or point-of-service . . .

TRACING
  • TRACING is the capability to identify the origin,
movements and relevant associated information of
a particular unit and/or batch of product located
within the supply chain by reference to records
    held upstream . . .

8
ISO 8402
  • defines TRACEABILITY as the ability to trace
the history, application or location of an entity
    by means of recorded identifications

9
The Fresh Produce Traceability Guidelines (FPT
Guidelines / FPTG)
  • defines TRACEABILITY as a
verifiable method of identification of fields,
growers, locations and produce in all packaging
    and transport/storage configurations at all
    stages of the supply chain

10
Regulation (EC) No 178/2002
  • defines TRACEABILITY as the ability
to trace and follow a food, feed, food-producing
animal or substance intended to be or expected to
be incorporated into a food or feed in all stages
    of production, processing or distribution

11
Traceability Drivers
  • Demands from Retailers / Consumers E.U.
    Regulation (EC) 178/2002
  • SA Official Food Safety System
  • (All countries)

12
Traceability is fuelled by concerns for the
safety of consumers . . .
  • Phytosanitary issues
  • Residues of crop protection products (MRLs)
  • Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • EurepGAP
  • HACCP
  • Hygiene and safety norms from British Retail
    Consortium (BRC) . . .

13
E.U. governmental demands focus on three main
areas
  • Product labelling
  • To inform the consumer about characteristics
such as composition and origin, nutritional and
    allergenic issues
  • EAN/UCC Global standard

14
E.U. governmental demands focus on three main
areas
  • Product quality and safety assurance
  • Focuses primarily on the organisational measures
needed to guarantee product quality and safety

15
E.U. governmental demands focus on three main
areas
  • 3. Product liability
  • Adopts the premise that the legal entity that
puts a product on the market is liable for
    damages caused by deficiencies . . .
  • Unless it can prove that it followed necessary
procedures according to the dictated standards
and pass the buck to other parties in the
    supply chain.

16
  • To sum up . . .Regulation (EC) 278/2002 defines
the scope of and specifies requirements for
traceability of fresh produce supplied to the
EU.It also specifies that products at risk
should be withdrawn or recalled unless proven
safe. It requires due diligence throughout the
chain. Articles relating to traceability come
into force on 01 January 2005 in EU.
  • SA fruit standards requirement 2004 season

17
Product Recall
  • Different timescales (countries)
  • Based on batches size of batch
  • Identify unfit product(s)
  • Remove unfit product(s)
  • Inform Executive Officer (SA Law)

18
Requirements
  • All FBOs must register with DoA
  • Alphanumeric coding (Old PUC)
  • Show compliance to traceability
  • From Farm to Fork
  • Checklists
  • Compliance audits
  • Be listed on PPECB database as compliant
