Questions Answers
  • Why are MSDSs and CILs issued?
  • This is the method used by the manufacturer of a
chemical substance to provide information about
    the product to the user
  • What is a Material Safety Data Sheet?
  • This is the method used by the manufacturer of a
chemical substance to provide information about
    the product to the user
  • What is a Chemical Inventory List (CIL)?
  • This is a list of potentially hazardous chemical
substances found in a given location. CIL for
University Mailing Services includes list of
potentially hazardous chemicals used and stored
  • Where are University Mailing Services MSDSs and
    CILs kept?
  • They are kept in a black loose leaf notebook
clearly labeled MSDS. The notebook is kept in
the front office on the supplies desk
  • What is an Employee Exposure Report (EER)?
  • This is a report that records the unsafe exposure
of any employee to a chemical on the CIL. An
exposure is contact with a chemical without
    required safety equipment
  • How do I fill out an EER?
  • Fill in the blanks within 24 hours of the
exposure. The EER is retained by the OSU Safety
Department for at least 40 years. You may refer
to the report during the storage time

irritation. Avoid prolonged skin contact and
    inhalation of mist vapors
  • Exposure Limits
  • e.g. Not Established, Avoid Prolonged Contact
  • First Aid Procedures
  • e.g. Flush eyes or skin for at least 15 minutes
with plenty of water. If irritation persists,
call a physician. If swallowed, induce vomiting
immediately by giving two glasses of water and
sticking finger down throat. Never give anything
by mouth to an unconscious person

  • Slides 11 - 12

11
Method of Instruction
  • When is Right to Know training required?
  • At initial assignment to the job
  • Whenever new hazards are introduced (Higher
    hazard level substance)
  • Annual Review
  • Of what must the employee be informed?
  • The requirements of the Right to Know
    regulations
  • Any operations in their area where hazardous
    chemicals are used
  • The location and availability of the MSDS plan
  • What must the training cover?
  • Methods to detect presence of release
  • Physical and health hazards present
  • Measures for personal protection
  • The details of the company plan

  • Four Stages of Program
  • MSDS acquisition
  • Marking and labeling system
  • Employee Training
  • A written plan on how to meet the law and react
    to emergencies
  • Describe Policies and Procedures
  • Hazard detection
  • Spill response
  • Use of protective equipment
  • Give open book test to determine that training
    was effective

This Training class is your required Right to
Know Training!!!
13
  • Part Three
  • Labeling
  • Slides 14 - 19

14
Labeling
  • What is the OSU (HMIS) System for labeling
    hazardous materials?
  • It is a rectangular label attached to the
substance or to the storage area immediately
adjacent to the materials. It gives six facts
about the subject. It tells you what your
exposure risk is and what precautions you should
    take

15
Labeling
  • What is the OSU (NFPA) System for labeling
hazardous materials and where is it used?
  • This is the diamond sign at the entrance to a
building used to tell emergency crews such as
police and fire what hazardous substance may be
    encountered.
  • The diamond has four colors. The chart indicates
what the hazard level is. The highest risk level
of any substance in the building is indicated on
    the sign
