2WHAT IS A U D I ?
- Founded in 1980 with permanent headquarters in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
- Regional, non-governmental, non-profit, research,
technical and consulting organization.
- The technical and scientific arm of the Arab
Towns Organization (ATO) that has a membership of
about 400 Arab cities and municipalities
representing 22 Arab states.
- AUDIs Board of trustees includes 14 Arab mayors
3AUDIs OBJECTIVES
- Enhance the efficiency and build the capacities
of Arab cities in planning, urban development and
management. - Identify and research key problems confronting
Arab cities including issues of key population
groups, such as children, youth, women and
elders. - Organize conferences, symposia and workshops on
relevant issues and problems and propose policy
guidelines. -
- Facilitate the transfer of knowledge and
successful experiences from international
development organizations to Arab cities. - Foster networking and collaboration among Arab
cities on pertinent issues. - Help preserve the character and identity of Arab
cities .
4REGIONAL CDS FACILITY
- Only 5 CDSs in MENA out of some 100 CDSs
worldwide. - Partnership between AUDI-World Bank- Cities
Alliance to address this disparity. -

REGIONAL CDS FACILITY OBJECTIVES
- Build the capacities of MENA cities in CDS
preparation and implementation to propel their
comprehensive development, thus leading to
poverty reduction and prosperity. - Serve as a regional center for CDS-related
expertise and knowledge serving MENA cities,
professionals, and research institutions. - Facilitate exchange of good practices and lesson
learned from other CDSs. - Assist MENA cities in identifying and recruiting
consultants, and in approaching donors. - Establish an ATO bi-annual regional award that
recognizes excellence in CDS preparation and
implementation.

7CURRENT ACTIVITIES
- Assisting the cities of Amman, Alexandria, Sana'a
in CDS preparation, in partnership with the World
Bank and others.
- Other Cities Yemen Port Cities (Aden, Hudida
Mukalla) managed by World Bank.
8PLANNED ACTIVITIES
- To assist interested and committed cities in
initiating and preparing CDSs in the pipeline
Aleppo, Hama, Tripoli (Lebanon), -
- To build a solid knowledge base on urban
development issues relevant to the region --
focus on local economic development, poverty
reduction, urban governance, slum upgrading and
physical planning. - To organize sub-regional workshops to raise
awareness and to build local capacities in CDS
preparation. - To enhance knowledge sharing and connectivity
among policy makers and practitioners through the
Internet and publications. - To document the lessons learned from each CDS,
and to share them regionally and internationally
in order to inform the preparation of new CDSs.
