6The Next Generation of Intelligent Protection
Designed and developed specifically for the
protection of electronic components, the LCU is
at the forefront of Cut-Out technology.
The LCU will provide the additional protection
and filtering required by the majority of
electronic lamp control devices.

8Electronic Technology
Street Lighting is entering an exciting new
generation of electronic technology, that offers
un-paralleled flexibility and efficiencies. Our
product has been developed specifically for the
demands of this new market.

10The Power Supply
- Electricity consists of a single phase or three
phase waveform ( normally a sine wave with
little if any distortion ) characterised by - VOLTAGE
- CURRENT
- FREQUENCY
- SYMMETRY (only for three phase supplies)
11LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
12Power Supply Problems
- From the source to the connected loads, the sine
wave can be polluted with various types of
electrical disturbance - SPIKES and ELECTRICAL NOISE
- SAGS and BROWNOUTS
- FREQUENCY FLUCTUATIONS
- VOLTAGE HARMONICS
- MOMENTARY INTERRUPTIONS and MAINS FAILURES
- TRANSIENT VOLTAGES
13LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
14Power Supply Problems
These disturbances are caused by a variety of
sources including failures and switching problems
within the electrical transmission and
distribution system, extreme weather conditions
and the operation of heavy industrial and / or
faulty hardware. Mains interruptions are the
only immediate evident disturbances.
15LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
16Power Supply Problems
Spikes, transients, sags and brownouts are far
more common and can stress the power supplies
within street lighting and communication
applications to the point where hardware damage,
data processing errors and costly downtime
result. Harmonics can also cause unexpected
heating damage to electronic switching.

18Effects of Power Supply Problems on Equipment
The increasing interconnectivity and complexity
of many street lighting installations , and their
requirements to operate reliably, dramatically
raises the demand for the correct power solution
to be implemented. Power disturbances can
result in productivity losses, product quality
deterioration, health safety risks, and may
undermine the service itself.

20Effects of Power Supply Problems on Equipment
Electronic products data processing systems
within critical environments must be protected to
avoid hardware damage, data processing errors and
sudden system failures.

of Defence
25LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
26 It will take the burden off, cables,
connections, contactors and the mains supply
transformer when a large number of Public
Lights are switched-on simultaneously.

- Protection for
- Electronic Monitoring Systems.
- Protection for
- Electronic Ballast Devices.
- Protection for
- Electronic Communication Systems.
- Protection for
- Electronic Timers.
29LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
30Protection
- Protection for Ignitors.
- One major street lighting contractor
- found that 37 of their call-outs were due to
premature failure of ignitors.
Failure caused by mains transients.
31LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
32Function
- Minimises Power Up Surges
- Provides Overload Short Circuit Protection
- Protection from Mains Transients Lightning
- Attenuation of the Higher Emissions Bands
33LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
34Minimises Power Up Surges
- Public Lighting loads contain capacitance.
This capacitance will contain inrush currents at
power up.
- Its intensity depends exactly on the position of
switch-on within the mains cycle.
- The LCU protects your equipment from this
problem by providing a SOFT START control.
35LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
36Example of surge current without protection
The above diagram demonstrates surge current in
a Public Lighting Load when it switches on close
to the mains cycle peak.
37LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
38THE SWITCH-ON ALWAYS TAKES PLACE AT THE MAINS
CYCLE ZERO POINT WHEN THE LOAD CONDITIONER IS
INSTALLED.
IT RANDOMISES THE SWITCH- ON TIMES.
39LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
40Example of surge current with protection
The Load Conditioner Unit reduces the surge
current to its minimum level.
41LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
42The randomisation function is implemented by
programming a pseudo random number into each unit
at manufacture.
The delay times are fixed within each unit. THIS
GREATLY REDUCES UNITS ENGAGING SIMULTANEOUSLY.
43LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
44- If the Load Conditioner detects a load current
exceeding 10 amps it will switch off the load
within fifty micro seconds.
- If there is a short circuit the LCU will shut
down the load within one micro second.
- In both cases, the load will be reapplied 2
seconds later. If the fault is still detected the
LCU will automatically shut-down.
45LOAD CONDITIONER UNIT
46As long as the surge current is less than 30 amps
then the Load Conditioner will not interrupt it.
This allows power factor correction capacitors
up to 300 Micro Farads to be used without
tripping the Load Conditioner.

50Attenuation of the higher emissions bands
- The Tofco Load Conditioner attenuates all
emissions in the region of 0.5MHz upwards.
- This should ensure Emissions Compliancy (EN55015
note 1) in Public Lighting Installations, that
employ a number of Electronic Ballasts and
Monitoring Systems.

designed to comply with the above the overall
system may not due to the non-compliance of other
components such as the ballast, communications
units or control devices. The overall system
needs to be tested for compliance
separately. Note2 While the LCU on is own meets
EN61000-2-3 class A, it is possible for the
overall lighting system to meet class C as the
LCU distortion component is small.
