Why do we need this?
  • Leads to dialog among the neighborhood residents.
  • Builds consensus for a shared vision and goals
    for the central north side.
  • Lets developers,govt., funders know what the
    community will support.
  • Easier to get funded by state and city agencies
    when we have a plan.
  • Easier to attract developers.

Who will be doing the planning?
  • Central North Side Residents
  • CNNC Membership
  • Central North side stake holders (Govt.
    officials, local businesses, local social service
    providers, local institutions -AGH, museums,
    etc.)
  • Community Planning Initiatives (CPI) Committee
    -Steering Working Group
  • Urban Planner/Design Firm

Steering Working Group
  • A sub-set of the CPI Committee
  • 10-12 Members
  • Will consist of members of each of the other
    committees.
  • Other stake holders - someone who will represent
    merchants, church/social service org., renters.
  • Will bring information to the Urban Planner.
  • Will disseminate information from the Urban
    Planner.

Urban Planner Selection Process
  • Community Design Center of Pittsburgh (CDCP)
    suggested 5 Urban Plan Firms.
  • Request for Proposal (RFP) sent to all 5.
  • 4 Interested parties responded.
  • CPI went through 4 proposals and eliminated 1.
  • CPI members, Exec. Committee,CEO, CDCP rep
    interviewed 3 and eliminated 1.
  • Board interviewed 2 top choices and selected 1.

Interview Process
  • Each Firm gave a 15 min. presentation.
  • Each was then asked the same 6 questions.
  • General questions and discussion.
  • Scored on 6 criteria -Pfaffmann Associates
    (PA) scored the highest.
  • This info given to board prior to board
    interviews.
  • After board interviews the board voted 9 to 1 in
    favor of hiring PA.

  • Understood this a diverse neighborhood.
  • Understood that a high priority is given to
    getting high neighborhood involvement.
  • Preservation is important to consider.
  • Willing to try to employ local residents and
    businesses in this process.

  • Interested in exploring how to make the
    neighborhood green, sustainable, walkable
    community.
