3Salamanca Statement
4All students should learn together
- We partly agree with the statement. We feel that
children with a handicap who can work on the same
level with the other children (without changing
the curriculum) can be included in a regular
school. - The children with other handicaps who cant work
on the same level should be in special schools.
5Inclusion will change attitudes
- Inclusion will only succeed if the teacher has an
open mind and can handle diversity. If the
teacher has the feeling that the child doesnt
fit in and isnt capable to stay in the regular
school, the teacher must have the opportunity to
discuss this with the parents and send the child
to a special school.
6Special schools are useful
- We agree with this statement. We feel that the
expertise and experiences of the teachers in
special schools are very useful to the children
with a disability who cant work on the same
level as their classmates. - The programs in special schools are especially
for children with different disabilities. The
classes are smaller, so theres more attention
for one child.
7Inclusion needs a different way of working with
the curriculum
- We agree with the statement. When you have a
child in your class with a disability, you have
to change your way of teaching. - You cant set the same goals for children with
special needs, because they cant live up to
them. - The teachers have to be well prepared and they
have to know the background of the children with
special needs.
8Inclusion is teamwork
- If you got an inclusive school there must be a
schoolwork plan with a lot of information about
how to work with inclusion. - All teachers must be able to teach children with
special needs. - All parties like parents, other teachers etc.
have to have an open mind towards each other
about the child with special needs.
9Inclusion needs a correct view on persons with
disabilities
- We believe you have to be an objective teacher at
all times, but especially when you work with
children with an handicap. - You have to look at the potential of each child
instead of looking at their impairments.
10Inclusion is possible in adult life
- We believe inclusion is possible in adult life.
The society has to adapt his standards, but since
we all take part of the society this can be done! - The transition from school to adult working life
has to be effective.
11Parents are partners in inclusive education
- We agree with this statement. Parents play a very
important role in the inclusive process of their
child in the mainstream school. - Parents know whats best for their child, so they
want the best for their child by taking part in
the process of putting their child in an
inclusive school. - Parents have to be involved at all times.
12The specific competences a teacher needs working
in an inclusive setting
13Based on quality of life and wellbeing of each
child and each life environment
- Its important for each child to feel save within
the school environment. - Its the teachers responsibility to make sure
every child has friends. This means the inclusive
child needs a little bit more help from the
teacher at this point. The teacher can use the
buddy-system for this.
14Need of support and class-practice with
differentiation
- Differentiation is a very important item in
education. We think remedial teaching is a good
form of differentiation. - Working together as a group helps children to
develop social skills. - We dont think differentiation always has to take
place in the classroom, but whats most suitable
at the time.
15Communicate with parents
- There has to be a good communication stream with
parents, teachers, MD-team and other parties
involved. - All these parties have to be able to communicate
with each other at all times through meetings
etc. - The communication has to be objective.
16Coordination with colleges and other caring-people
- Its essential for the colleges and other
caring-people to have a good coordination between
them. We think this is of most important, because
people who work with children have to be
interested and involved by (inclusive) children.
17Correct vision on problems and handicaps
- The important thing of a teacher of an inclusive
class is to know where the problems lay with each
child, so the teacher can be of best help for the
child. - You have to have organisation skills, know how to
use the right methods, didactic materials etc.
18Our conclusion about inclusion
- We as a group think inclusion has his good sights
and his less sights. We think you have to take
one child at a time and base your decision to put
it on a regular school on the situation of the
child. - We think special schools are very important,
because of the expertise and the experience of
the teachers.
19- When there is inclusion in your class the most
important questions are - - How does the disabled child feel?
- - How does the teacher feel?
- - How do the rest of the children of
- the class feel?

21How we felt about the inclusion project
- We learned a lot about inclusion, also about
inclusion in different countries. - We are able to form an objective opinion about
inclusion. - We had a lot of fun during this project with all
the different people and the visits to the
primary schools.
