Asepto Syringe
  • The asepto syringe is filled with saline and used
for irrigation in a stream. Fill it by squeezing
the bulb and drawing up the fluid as the bulb is
released. Then hold the syringe upside down and
squeeze the bulb again and fill it by turning it
upside down and releasing the bulb with the tip
in the fluid again. Repeat 3 times to fill.

4
Basin
  • Usually filled with sterile water for soaking
used instruments. A second basin may be filled
with saline if lap sponges are to be moistened
and used during the procedure. Comes wrapped
sterilely and is to be opened on a ring stand.

5
Bovie Pad
  • This is the grounding pad for the bovie pencil.
It is applied to the patients skin over a
non-bony, hair free surface (such as the thigh or
buttock) by the circulating nurse. It is a non
sterile supply and is thrown away after each
case. Some times the cord will be
non-disposable. This pad must be used every time
a bovie pencil is used because it provides a
continuous circuit for the electricity of the
bovie pencil and keeps the patient from getting
    an electric shock.

6
Bovie Pencil
  • The plug end of the cord is passed off to the
circulating nurse to be plugged into the bovie
machine. It is used to cauterize blood vessels
(back of switch) and also to cut tissue (front of
switch). Tip is considered a sharp and must be
removed from the pencil and disposed of in the
sharps container. Tips may also be interchanged
with other tips such as Teflon coated, needle
    tip, or a 6 extension.

7
Graduate Pitcher
  • Filled with 1000 ml. of saline on the back table.
This will be warm saline if it is to be poured
into the body. It is measured and the
Anesthesiologist may ask the tech. how much
saline was used to help determine blood loss.
This is the fluid to be used any time moisture is
needed in of near the wound. Never put water in
    your pitcher.

8
Kidney Basin
  • Another extra bowl to be used at the techs
discretion. The recessed edge is often useful to
catch spillover saline when the wound is
irrigated. The name kidney refers to its shape.

9
Kitners
  • These tiny sponges are always attached to a clamp
when put on the mayo stand. They are to be left
in the foam case they come in, unless they are on
a clamp. Put them immediately back into the foam
when they have been used. They are used for
blunt dissection (intentional tearing of tissue)
in small areas. They come in packs of 5, are
part of the sponge and needle counts, and have a
radio opaque thread running through them for
x-ray location if one is lost.

10
Lap Sponges
  • Theses are used for cases where large amounts of
blood are expected or in cases with a large
incision. They come in packs of five and must be
counted at the beginning and end of every case.
They have a radio opaque band that runs through
it to make it visible by x-ray for procedures
    where a sponge is lost.

11
Syringe and Needles
  • The needle twists into the hub of the leuer lock
syringe. Draw medication into syringe out of the
medicine cup, and then attach the needle.
Needles are numbered according to size in
diameter. The bigger the number, the smaller the
needle. Larger needles are used for drawing
medications out of bottle with a rubber stopper.
Smaller needles are used in the patients skin
when they are awake and will feel it.

12
Light Handles
  • Come Sterile for opening onto back table. As
sterile field is set up, handles will be attached
to spot lights and will be the only sterile place
on the light that can be touched by sterile
    personnel.

13
Marking Pen with Labels and Ruler
  • Marking pen is for writing on skin, labeling
medications or any other writing need. It is
thrown away at the end of the case and a new one
is used for the next case.

14
Medicine Cup
  • Hold medications on the back table. Drugs are
poured from a medicine bottle into the medicine
cup by the circulating nurse in a sterile manor.

15
Needle Mattress
  • Used needles are stuck in the foam of this
mattress as they are used during the case. One
needle goes in each numbered square. This
facilitates the needle count at the end of the
case and keeps the needles safe from puncturing
    personnel or drapes.

16
Raytec Sponges
  • These are used for cases with small incisions or
they may be folded and used on a sponge stick in
larger incisions. They come in packs of ten and
are a part of the sponge and needle count at the
beginning and end of every case. They have a
radio opaque thread running through them so they
may be located by x-ray if one is lost.

17
Small Bowl
  • Used on the back table for a variety of reasons
including specimens, dye, sponge or dressing
organization, etc. Its use is up to the tech.
Even if it is sitting empty, keep it on your back
table as a need for it could arise at any time
    during the case.

18
Suction Tubing
  • Used on most cases for suctioning things such as
fluid, blood, smoke etc. The end with the
adaptor is passed off to the nurse to plug into a
canister. The other end is attached to a suction
    tip.

19
Tail Sponges
  • These are used most often during vaginal
hysterectomies to pack bowel away from the
uterus. They are attached to a clamp and
moistened with saline to keep them from sticking
to the bowel. They come in packs of five, are
part of the sponge and needle counts, and have a
radio opaque band running through them for x-ray
    location if one becomes lost.

20
Suction Tips
  • These are attached to suction tubing. The
bulbous end of the yankauer tip is for use in
large openings (abdomen). The narrower end of
the CV tip is for smaller holes (throat). The
Frasier tip is used for the smallest holes (nose).

3-way Stopcock
  • Connector between two types of tubing and a
syringe for measuring fluid amounts. A moveable
valve shuts off one port at a time.
