Introduction
- Systems that fully integrate the use of
computers at every stage in the design and
manufacturing process. - CADMAT is different to
CADCAM because computers are also used for
decision making. For example -Information
control through gathering, storage, retrieval
and organisation of data. -Narrowing the field
of choices available using number-based and
other methods -Production process and management
techniques to run some parts of the
manufacturing process.

CADMAT
Concurrent Manufacturing
- This is a system in which a product team is
organised so that all the design, development and
manufacturing stages are closely linked. -This
reduces errors because of previous knowledge and
saves time. -A manufacturing engineer will
immediately be able to tell a design engineer
whether the part he/she designed can be made.

Computer Integrated Manufacture
- Traditional approaches to manufacturing
involve a linear or sequential approach. -Design
errors and manufacturing problems were
likely. -All aspects of a companys operations
must be integrated so they can share information
and communicate together. -CIM creates efficient,
co-operative and smoothly running production
lines.

Flexible Manufacturing System
-With increase in global competition and open
markets, consumers are demanding increased
diversity and regular product updating. -This
encourages manufactures to invest into flexible
equipment. -This enables manufacturers to explore
various processing sequences that might be
available through alternative configurations of
plant and equipment.

Just In Time Manufacture
- Developed in the 1960s within Toyotas car
plants, as a means to minimum delay on consumer
orders. -Achieved by apply a strategy of
computer-aided management in which raw materials
and components are delivered from the supplier
just before they are needed in each stage of the
manufacturing process.

Automatic storage and retrieval systems
- Raw materials and products can be automatically
retrieved and stored by a system that is managed
by a host computer. -Component transfer from the
ASRS to the machines can be accomplished using
either a conveyor or an automated guided vehicle
(AGV).

The Impact of ICT
-With the integration of computer technology most
products, can be designed better or updated with
technological advancements, or produced more
economically. -Economies of scale can be
exploited by companies who use more efficient
methods of production, transportation and
manufacture. -However this also leads to
increased unemployment because computers can work
24 hours a day without breaks for nothing! Humans
cant!
