• When Drake started attacking the Spanish ships
  in their own ports , Phillip was very angry.
  Elizabeth executed Mary Queen of Scots, who
  Phillip hoped would become queen. He decided to
  invade England and make himself king. This was
  one of the most famous boating victories. The
  defeat of the Armada.

A Strange Choice

• Phillip II chose the most unusual captain the
  Duke Of Medina Sidonia. He didnt want to do the
  job and he had two good reasons for this. One, he
  hadn't even been in the navy but most of all he
  suffered from

• While the Armada was sailing down the channel
  Elizabeth gave a speech. She said I have the
  body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the
  heart and stomach of a king, and a king of
  England too and think foul scorn that any prince
  in Europe should dare to invade the borders of my
  realm.

The Route Of the Armada
Phillips plan was for the armada to pick up
soldiers from the Spanish Netherlands and invade
England. The armada never reached Holland. They
sailed up the Channel, chased by the English
ships, and anchored at Calais where Drake sent in
fire ships to break it up. With his fleet
separated and damaged Sidonia realised he had
lost and was now concentrating on getting his
ships back to Spain. They didnt have that much
choice to their route home. They had to try to
sail round Scotland and down the west coast of
Ireland.

Disaster for the Spanish

• Over 80 Spanish ships were destroyed in the
  Armada and 10,000 Spanish troops and sailors died.

Beacons

• The English had a good network of beacons. When
  they were lit the next person on the next hill
  would light theirs and so on until it reached the
  captain (Drake). Rumour says that when the
  message The Spanish ships are in sight came
  Drake finished his game of bowls before he did
  anything.
