10 things (you may not know) about Harrogate

• Harrogate originated in the 17th Century
• There were two settlements
• High Harrogate
• Low Harrogate

• The first mineral spring in Harrogate was
  discovered in 1571, containing chalybeate,
  sulphur and saline.
• The water from the Tewitt Well possessed similar
  properties to that from the springs of the
  Belgian town of Spa which gave its name to spa
  towns

• The Tewitt Well is marked by a dome in the
  Harrogate Stray
• Other wells can be found in Harrogate Valley
  Gardens and the Royal Pump Room Museum

• The Harrogate Stray (an area of open parkland
  that runs through the centre of the town) was
  created in 1778 by an act of Parliament.
• The act fixed the size of the Stray at 200 acres
  (0.8 km²),
• Even now when part of it is removed, due to road
  expansion etc, it must be replaced elsewhere

• Bettys Tea Room
• Owned by Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate
• Same company that makes Yorkshire Tea
• Recently opened a second tearoom in Harrogate
• It famously has over fifty tea pots located
  around the tea rooms

• Harrogate has the only Kursaal in Britain
• (Building for use of visitors at a Health resort
  German for cure room)
• The Royal Hall is a national heritage building
• Restoration completed in 2007
• Prince Charles opened it in 2008

• In 2007 2 metal detectorists found the
  Harrogate Hoard
• A 10th Century Viking treasure
• Contained 700 coins and other items from as far
  away as Afghanistan
• Described by British Museum as most important
  find for 150 years

• Population 85,000
• Alongside Runnymede, Surrey, people in Harrogate
  drink alcohol to more hazardous levels than
  anywhere else in the UK.
• The Harrogate postcode, HG, is the only one on
  the UK mainland without a major branch of the
  supermarket chain Tesco
