1
draft-ietf-sipping-toip-04
Framework for real-timetext over IP using SIP
2
  • This draft describes how one could use SIP and
    RTP to implement ToIP services
  • a framework for implementers
  • Draft is WG item, WGLC finished November 2005
  • This version 04 is an attempt to address
comments received during WGLC on version 03
  • Some further recent discussion on the mailing
    list
  • Some WG decisions are now needed as to how to
    proceed

3
  • Main discussion seems to be around purpose
  • By reading the title of the draft(), it seems
like a requirements document. However, the draft
seems to define a framework not a framework of
requirements, but a framework to implement ToIP
    services.
  • () Title of 03 was Framework of requirements
for real-time text conversation using SIP
  • Title of 04 version amended to Framework for
real-time text over IP using SIP, content
    restructured to reflect this.

4
  • Some comments on confusing structure of version
    -03
  • Structure of version 04 changed to be more clear
(but content of version 03 kept)
  • Chapter 5 list of requirements that the
proposed framework satisfies (explain WHAT the
    framework seeks to do)
  • Chapter 6 implementation framework (explain HOW
    to do it)
  • Chapter 7 further recommendations, useful
information for service providers using this
    framework

5
  • In last few days before the meeting, some
comments by one person on mailing list claiming
draft is (1) incomplete and (2) contradictory
  • Asked for evidence of contradiction, but none
    given.
  • No itemised list of missing stuff, but general
comment that draft needs to address things like
    peer-to-peer and QoS.
  • ? Feeling is that this is out of scope for
    current draft.
  • ? Peer-to-peer, QoS are to be resolved within
SIP, not as subitem of ToIP (this draft just
says using SIP, you can build a ToIP service
that is based on the same technology as VoIP).

6
  • Proposal on way forward
  • Seek WG agreement on
  • Scope of current draft correct and complete?
  • Do we agree that WGLC comments have been
    addressed?
  • Do we agree that further ToIP related work is
likely, for example call-flow draft, draft on
    relay invocation scenarios, etc?
  • Some further nits identified, so draft 05 to be
    submitted addressing these.
  • Version 05 to receive final check, then
    submission to IESG
  • ? Objective finalise this piece of work so that
    we can move forward.
