2Introduction
- Buzz Broadband is bringing all the benefits of
the broadband future to our Wide Bay-Burnett,
Fraser Coast region of Queensland, with a modern,
competitive telecommunications network. - We are building our own delivery infrastructure
intended to not only bypass the speed and
coverage limitations of the existing telephone
network, but to free us from the financial
constraints of that network. - Buzz Broadband believes that the future of
telecommunications will be based on the Internet
Protocol (IP), in fact our telephone calls, TV
channels as well as Internet data are carried
over our IP network. - Buzz has, therefore, invested in rolling out an
all-IP, wireless network which delivers
sufficient bandwidth to every user allowing the
above, and many other bandwidth intensive
services to be delivered.

3Wireless Services
- Many customers in Buzzs regional area cannot be
connected to ADSL - Too far from exchange
- Copper in poor condition
- Many areas are blocked by Pair-Gain and RIM
systems (even in new developments) - Initial Wireless deployments Government Funded
- HiBis/Broadband Connect scheme subsidised
customer connections to equalise cost of delivery
of basic broadband to regional customers. - Tremendously successful and effective in
addressing disadvantage and creating a
competitive marketplace with a truly independent
infrastructure alternative. - Demand for alternatives to Wire-Line Voice
- Buzz have found many customers would like to
remove their copper dependence altogether

4Why WiMAX?
- WiMAX is the first interoperable standard for
Wireless Broadband Access - Based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 and IEEE
802.16e-2005 standards - Currently provides fixed and nomadic
applications, migrating to full mobility - OFDM air interface, supporting non line of sight
propagation - WiMAX essentially provides true Wireless
Telecommunications
High Performance
Low Cost
Highly Secure
- Security sub-layer between PHY and MAC layers
- Encryption of user data
- Certificate based device authentication
- Economies of scale through volume deployments
- Commitment from major chipset manufacturers
- Advanced antenna techniques
- Quality of service
- Adaptive modulation
- Improved spectral efficiency

5Voice Services
- Providing voice services is key to a successful
business model - Whilst customers expect high speed data, they are
not willing to pay for it! - Voice is the premium service killer app which
enables true competition with the incumbent
operator - Wireless networks typically provide either data
only, or data with low quality voice - Carrier Class Voice services are mandatory to
establish any credibility with the customer - Voice quality must be as good or better than
existing voice offerings - Customers are used to the Grade of Service
currently provided by wired networks - E.g. Circuit-Switched technology
- Network must allow Emergency Call support
- This is the only way to displace the incumbent
since regulator requires each household to be
able to call Emergency services during power
outage or busy period - This is a challenge to most wireless technologies
the Air is a shared media !

6Voice over WiMAX
- WiMAX provides advanced QOS features
- Multiple Service Flows per SS
- Each service flow supports different QOS
policies, enabling multiple services to be
simultaneously supported - Prioritisation
- WiMAX supports 7 different priority levels for
traffic in the uplink and downlink - Bandwidth Management
- Maximum Information Rate (MIR)
- Committed Information Rate (CIR)
- Uplink scheduling
- Best Effort (BE)
- Non real-time Polling Service (nrtPS)
- Real-time Polling Service (rtPS)
- Unsolicited Grant Service (UGS)
- Packet Classification enables WiMAX to filter
traffic into different service flows - Enables voice traffic to be distinguished from
data traffic
WiMAX provides excellent QOS for VoIP
