Title: Retrofitting: Technology Solutions

1
Retrofitting Technology Solutions
  • Session D

2
Speakers
  • Daaf De Kok on recycling of concrete
  • Jan Desmyter on eco-innovation barriers in the
    construction industry
  • Andreas Hermelink on a pilot project of
    refurbishment of multi-dwelling building
  • Agnès Thibault on the importance of the SME in
    the construction industry
  • Ronald Rovers on the need to tackle the existing
    building stock.

3
Client Awareness
  • The more demanding, experienced and
professionalised the client, the more likely it
will pull for renewal and innovation.
  • Increasing the competence of clients as buyers
and demand setters as well as partners in the
design and construction process, reinforces their
    innovation driving facilities.

4
Need for Education and Training of SMEs and the
architects
  • There is not a lack of techniques and
innovations, there is a lack of technicians.
  • Stimulate young people to enter the industry
  • Innovative technologies, processes or products
    require education and training.
  • Find an equilibrium between the generalist and
    the specialist.
  • Clustering of SMEs and competences could be a
    solution.

5
Need for RTD and Demonstration
  • Introducing a new technology in the construction
    industry needs intensive research and
    technological development.
  • It has to be demonstrated/proven that the
customer/client can be convinced of the utility
    and performance.

6
Need for Standards
  • As Sordyl stated the hallmark of an accepted
technology is its inclusion in standards such as
building codes and specifications. It provides
    designers, specifying professionals and
    contractors with
  • Confidence in the viability of the technology
  • Basic information for its application
  • It reduces the perception of risks associated
    with its use.

Jan Desmyter Head of Department, BBRI, Belgium
7
Complexity of the Job
  • Insulation of roofs, cellars, facades,
  • Ventilation
  • Windows air and water tightness, insulation
    performance
  • Installations lighting, heating, cooling,
    electricity
  • Renewable energies
  • Water use of rain and grey water, etc.

8
Role of the Government
  • Stimulate RTD
  • Stimulate demonstration
  • Lead by example
  • Adapt regulations, not to overregulate (a new
barrier), but to give confidence in the
    technologies.
  • Focus on behavioral changes.

9
Conclusion
  • With the existing technologies a substantial
improvement can be realised. For energy
reductions of up to 90 were mentioned.
  • Nevertheless there is still room for additional
    improvements.
