4
MAIN TEACHING POINTS
  • Definition
  • What can we learn from OPSEC?
  • What are my limitations ?
  • Where is the adversary collecting ?
  • Daily OPSEC awareness.
  • Tips

5
OPSEC CYCLE
6
CAUTION
  • This lecture is meant to enhance your awareness
of OPSEC with respect to daily routine and not to
replace existing OPSEC programs in your unit.

7
OPSEC
It is said that OPSEC is the guarantor of Freedom
of Action
8
WHAT IS OPSEC?
  • OPSEC is keeping potential adversaries from
discovering our critical information. As the name
suggests, it protects our operations planned,
in progress and those completed. Success depends
on secrecy and surprise, so the organization can
accomplish the mission quicker and with less
risk. Enemies of Canada want our information, and
theyre not just after the military member to get
it. They want information from you, the civilian
    or dependant family members

9
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM OPSEC?
  • Look at your daily activities from an adversarial
    point of view
  • Understand what an adversary might know about you
or the organization you are employed with
  • Assess the amount of risk this places on you and
    the mission

10
WHAT ARE MY LIMITATIONS ?
  • As a minimum you should not disclose
  • Movement (Deployment and Timings)
  • Any issues with unit organization
  • Anything concerning security
  • Equipment issues (numbers, type etc.)
  • Location of units

If it doesnt feel right, then it is not
11
ADVERSARIES COLLECT AT
  • Public market, if you are deployed
  • Around locally employed persons
  • Gyms
  • Shopping malls
  • Public transportation
  • Basically anywhere someone you dont know who
    could be listening (e.g. Café)

12
DAILY OPSEC AWARENESS
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep sensitive discussions to designated secure
    areas
  • Keep a need-to-know attitude
  • Safeguard sensitive but unclassified information

13
A FEW TIPS
  • Ensure your co-workers know the information you
discuss with them, is to stay between you and
    them
  • Limit what you say on telephones. Whether theyre
landlines, cordless or cell phones, they can all
    be tapped
  • Censor what you put in e-mails. Anything sent
out on the Internet can be seen by anyone on the
    Internet
  • Limit what you say out in public, you never know
who is trying to listen in on your conversations

14
A FEW TIPS
  • Avoid Blogs and Chat Rooms.
  • Bluetooth and Blackberry are the largest leaks
while sitting in airports when you are in transit
to and from theatre you conduct business and
someone 30 feet away can download everything of
    what you are doing.
  • Blackberry can be remote triggered causing it to
    transmit information. (remove batteries)
  • Be mindful of what you throw in the garbage.
  • Pictures from overseas can easily violate OPSEC.
