Adjective patterns
2
  • How do we use adjective patterns?

3
In Unit 6, we learnt how to use adjectives in
certain patterns to give opinions. We can also
use adjectives in the following patterns to give
opinions It is / Its adjective that
Its obvious that monkeys are too intelligent to
be kept in zoos. It isnt fair that Tom is
allowed to go to the zoo tomorrow but we arent.
4
It is / Its adjective of noun / pronoun
to-infinitive
Its thoughtful of you to volunteer to clean the
animal cages. It isnt sensible of people to
destroy large parts of the worlds rainforests.
5
Note
Adjective patterns using It is / Its can also be
used in the simple past, e.g. It was sensible
of you to arrive early.
6
Complete the article and the comments using
adjective patterns. Use the words in brackets to
help you.

When I was young, I thought it was
(great) you could go to a zoo and see all
kinds of animals really close up. However, as I
got older, it was (clear)
the animals were not happy to be kept behind
bars. Now I think we should not have zoos
because it is
(cruel / us / keep) animals locked up in
cages. What do you think?
great that
clear that
cruel of us

to keep

It isnt
(fair / you / suggest) that all zoos are bad.
Some zoos only take in sick or orphaned animals
that wouldnt survive in the wild.
fair of you to suggest
Katie Chan
I think its
(selfish / us / have) zoos just for our
enjoyment. We should think about whats best for
the animals rather than ourselves.
selfish of us to have

I agree that we shouldnt keep animals in zoos.
Its (best) we see them in the wild so we can
learn more about their natural behaviour.
best that
