• Can expose interesting points of view and issues
• But only if the discussion gets beyond what all
  of us know about each other already

• Visibility for the community on the international
  stage

Best Event Laguna Beach (1988)

• Stirred up a tornado
• Non linear recursion considered bad
• Hardware data base machines considered bad

Worst Event -- Lowell

• Text and data bases
• Huge flop as the leadoff topic
• Rest of the event was largely the predictable
  people saying the predictable things
• However..
• NSF encouraged us to have another one
• Even though NSF rep (whose name escapes me)
  thought it was mediocre

My Advice

• Skip the platitudes
• We know them already
• Be bold and controversial
• Be visionary
