1
Jindalee State School
InstrumentalMusic Program2008 for 2009
2
Why a School Instrumental program?
  • Enrichment and enhancement of school experiences
for students with an aptitude in music.
  • Development of an area of learning that seems to
carry over into other areas of learning.
  • Enrich our community and carry on cultural
    traditions.
  • Be part of the internationally recognised, best
    practice Education Queensland music program.

3
Aims of the Program
  • To provide opportunity for students to develop
instrumental music skills as a group member, in
    an ensemble-based program.
  • To provide opportunities for these students to
develop their musical abilities while enhancing
    concentration, discipline, social skills and
responsibility as members of a musical group.
  • To provide an enriching dimension to the existing
    classroom curriculum.
  • To promote commitment and teamwork skills.

timetable and attending all lessons and
    rehearsals.

Attendance policy
  • Participation is one of the most important
    aspects of the program.
  • Without consistent attendance at lessons and
rehearsals, students miss vital steps in their
    musical development.
  • Parents will be notified, in writing, if
    non-attendance is occurring.
  • Having all equipment at each lesson and rehearsal
is considered to be part of the attendance
    requirement.

8
rehearsals
  • Take place before school.
  • Each member of an ensemble is a member of a TEAM,
and is expected to give priority to this team.
  • Additional out of school performances are
notified well in advance, mostly through notices.
  • Absences from performances or rehearsals must be
explained, in writing, by parents. Attendance is
    an expectation, not an option.

9
music camps/workshops
  • These are organised to provide musically
    enriching experiences for students through
  • focussed teaching and practice environment
  • tutorials with specialist tutors (District camps)
  • the rehearsal and performance of new repertoire
    in concentrated study conditions
  • social interaction with other students with
    similar skills and interests.

10
Costs
  • The Instrumental Music Program is self-funded. Ed
Qld provides the teachers, but instruments,
music, etc. must be provided by the school.

    the costs.

Instrumental Music Agreement
The success of everyone in the Instrumental
Program relies on the participation and conduct
of the participants. Therefore
  • Students Obligations
  • a)       Students are expected to commit to the
program for the remainder of their primary school
years. Any variance is to be negotiated between
the Principal, Music Coordinator, Music Teacher,
    Parent and Student.
  •  b)       Children must practise regularly and
show evidence of this during the weekly lesson.
  •  c)       Children must attend weekly lessons
    promptly.
  •  d)       Children must bring their instruments
and music on the appropriate days
  •  e)       Once at the required state of
proficiency, each child is expected to become a
member of a concert band and participate in all
    its activities.

13
Instrumental agreement (contd)
  • Students using any school instrument are required
to pay a hire levy of 80 per year.
  • All students in the Instrumental Music Program
are required to pay sheet music levy of 30 per
    year.
  • The program is not designed to allow students to
    change instruments unless under exceptional
circumstances. They must re-apply to join the
program and participate in the selection process
again. A place is not guaranteed in any case.
  • Students offered a place in Strings (Yr3) but who
are considering entry to the Band program (yr5)
need to consider options carefully. Changing is
    discouraged. Talk to teachers.
  • Children must be in correct uniform (55 shoes
and socks) for all official performances.
Students who do not meet minimum performances
uniform requirements will not be allowed to
    perform at official performances.

Welcome to the program!
  • The Jindalee State School instrumental music
program and its costs and responsibilities are
shared between students, staff, PC, school
    management, and families.
  • Like sport, it is an enrichment and enhancement
program. Not all children get to participate.
  • Approximately 40 of students in years 5-7 are
involved across the program. Strings start in
    Year 3.
  • It requires commitment and has support, time and
financial costs, that carry over a number of
    years.
  • It has long-term benefits beyond music that
generally relate to the level of commitment over
    time.
  • Any questions, concerns or issues, please talk to
