Title: Anonymous Traffic Collision Avoidance System (ATCAS)

1
Anonymous Traffic Collision Avoidance System
(ATCAS)

2
Societal Problem
The current collision avoidance system (TCAS II)
costs on average 200,000 per aircraft,3 and it
is only capable of performing vertical advisories
to avoid collisions.
3
My Solution ATCAS
It will be more reliable. It will be capable of
both vertical and horizontal avoidance
advisories. It will be cheaper. It can be used on
more aircraft.
4
How TCAS II Works

6
ATCAS versus TCAS II
ATCAS
TCAS II
Needs at least a 32 bit transmission Needs other
crafts Squawk ID Uses 5 receivers Expected to
cost from 10,000-50,000 Can create horizontal
course advisories
Needs at least a 64 bit transmission2 Needs
other crafts Squawk ID, flight path, and
location4 Uses 1 receiver Can cost from 50,000
to 250,000 Cannot create horizontal course
advisories
7
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
-Less clutter of transponder signals -Cost
affective for small aircraft -Can use swarm
intelligence to avoid other craft
Disadvantages
-Uses 5 receivers to triangulate other
aircraft -Unable to get more detailed information

Swarm Intelligence1

Cost Break Down
5 Receivers 800 each 4,000 1 Computer 500
each 500 Instillation 1,000-5,000 3,000
Software 500 500 Unexpected
Costs 2,000 Total 10,000

Can versus Should
Can
-Society has the technology.-A small computer
can easily handle the work.-Airplanes are
capable of handling additions of new systems.
Should
-It will reduce number of mid air collisions.-It
will reduce insurance costs.-It is cheaper then
current collision avoidance systems.-More
aircraft can participate in the system.
