What is HD DVD? The future of digital

• HD DVD is the next-generation DVD standard format
  for high-definition storage, playback and
  recording.
• Like today's DVDs, HD DVD is 1.2 millimetres
  thick, but it offers significantly more storage.
  Triple-layer 45GB HD DVD is the maximum capacity.
• HD DVD and DVD are fully compatible.
• Hybrid DVD and HD DVD discs will ensure an easy

How does HD DVD work? Blue laser technology

• HD DVD discs write data on a layer 0.6
  millimeters from the surface, the same depth as
  current DVDs.
• Red laser (650 nanometers) is used for DVD today
  by contrast HD DVD uses blue laser, which
  operates at lower wavelengths (405 nanometers)
• Why do nanometers matter? Shorter wavelengths
  suffer less diffraction, which enables a tight
  focus on the read-write surface.
• Consequently, the blue laser technology allows
  for more data to be stored on a disc of the
  same diameter as todays standard DVD.

standard?

  double-layer DVD.
• The double-layer 30 GB HD DVD can store up to 8
  hours of 1,125 scan line HD images, or up to 48
  hours of 525 scan line SD images.

• At CEATAC in 2005, slim HD DVD drives were on

• These demo models of the TS-L802A, a thin HD DVD
  playback drive for notebook PCs was developed by
  Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology (TSST).
