Who We Are
  • LBI Municipal Alliance is the partnership,
    between Long Beach Township, Surf City, Harvey
    Cedars, Beach Haven, Ship Bottom and Barnegat
    Light,responsible for administering
  • community based substance abuse prevention
    programs.

How It All Started
  • The Drug Enforcement and Demand Reduction Funds
    (DEDR) was established as part of the
    Comprehensive Drug Reform Act of 1987
  • In 1989, the Governors Council on Alcoholism and
    Drug Abuse was enacted, which in turn established
    the Alliance to Prevent Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Where Does the Money Come From
  • Penalties collected from drug-related offenses
    along with money from property forfeitures
  • 25 of the money in the fund is to be directed
    back to the communities for alcohol, tobacco and
    drug abuse prevention activities

How is the Money Distributed
  • 7.5 million per year are allocated to counties
    using a Funding Formula which uses general
    population, youth population, arrests, and fine
    collections as determining factors.
  • Ocean County received 558,906 in 2004

What is the Purpose of the Alliance
To create a network, comprised of all the
communities in New Jersey, which is dedicated to
a comprehensive and coordinated effort against
alcoholism and drug abuse.

Highlights of the NJ Alliance
  • Longest, continuing running substance abuse
    prevention program in the country
  • Operates in all 21 NJ counties, with 490
    participating communities.

  • DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)-Long Beach
    Island Police provide drug and alcohol prevention
    programs in elementary school, middle school and
    high school forums.
  • Lifeguards in Training-Prevention education
    program presented to 14 and 15 year old
    participants of the LIT program.

  • Little League Coach Education -Program provides
    coaches with information regarding alcohol,
    tobacco and drug issues.
  • Recognition Day-brings community members, coaches
    and parents together in a single event.
  • On Your Own-Information for elementary students
    and parents on developing the self-care skills to
    remain safely alone at home.

  • Peacemakers-Trains student leaders in conflict
    resolution.
  • Male Mentoring-Male mentoring sessions for at
    risk students aimed at fostering positive role
    models and reducing anti-social behavior.
  • Communication Celebration-Students and parents
    participate in workshops, activities and games
    that offer the opportunity to practice positive
    communication skills.

  • Preventative Parenting-series of workshops aimed
    at increasing parents knowledge and awareness of
    the parallel between alcohol and drug abuse and
    child neglect or abuse.
  • Hooked on Fishing-Families receive alcohol, drug
    and tobacco information while on local fishing
    trip.
  • Fresh Start Program-teaches methods to cope with
    the physical and psychological aspects of
    nicotine addiction.

Smokefree Dining
  • Maintains a database of smokefree dining
    establishments on LBI
  • LBI currently has 55 restaurants that are 100
    smokefree
  • Contributes to NJGASP Dining Guide
