11Sobering Facts
- According to UKs Nicholas Sterns Report in Oct
2006, the average global surface temperatures
have risen by 0.74ºC in the last 100 years. - All of the 10 warmest years have occurred since
1990, including each year since 1997. - In 2005, Singapore experienced its longest dry
spell in 29 years reported over 500 bush fires
in Jan-Feb 2005 alone. In Dec 2006 and Jan 2007,
there were worst floods in 30 years. The interval
of weather extremes, according to most
climatologists, is getting shorter any where in
the world. Climate change is happening and its
impacts demand response. - Our open economy continual prosperity could be
strongly influenced by climatic events happening
outside Singapore. - Many water-scarce regions have become thirstier.
- Sea level rise could make many coastal areas
uninhabitable. - Weather patterns have changed, producing stronger
heat waves, longer droughts, unprecedented
inundating floods and higher-intensity violent
storms.
