Emergent Stage

• 0-5 years of age
• Random marks to legitimate letters
• No sound symbol correspondence in early stage
• Lines and dots for writing
• Some letter-like forms

Letter-Name Alphabetic Stage

• 5-8 years of age
• Primarily work with consonants at beginning
• Short vowels towards end
• Forget vowels in syllables when writing
• Consonant blends and digraphs

Within Word Pattern Stage

• 7-10 years of age
• Know initial and final consonants
• Good accuracy on r-influenced short vowels (fur)
• Knows long vowel words
• Silent e
• Word families/patterns

Syllables and Affixes Stage

• 9-14 years of age
• Consider where syllables are
• Multisyllabic words and patterns
• Works with word endings and patterns
• Problems with syllables that receive less stress
  (hocky)
• Long and short vowel patterns good

Derivational Relations Stage

• Middle school on up to college
• Correctly spells most words
• Problems with uncommon roots
• Problems with silent consonants (condemn)
• Problems with suffixes (appearance instead of
  appearance)
