tell a story. They can paint beautiful pictures
in our minds.
3Marvin Made a Model Ship By Michael Acton Marvin
made a model ship Of playing cards and glue. It
was a mighty fighting ship When Marvin was all
through. Returning late one afternoon He found
his ship a wreck. His little brother Clarence
had, In anger, hit the deck!
4Poems have a main idea. You may not understand
every word of a poem the first time you read it!!
Dont worry!! Just ask yourself, What is this
mainly about? After you understand the main
idea, read the poem AGAIN to help you get the
meaning of each line. You can also see the
special ways that poets put words together.
5 Poetry uses words that sing. Think of nursery
rhymes!! Poems make music all by themselves.
This is called rhythm.
6At the Seaside By Robert Louis Stevenson When I
was down beside the sea A wooden spade they gave
to me To dig the sandy shore. My holes were
empty like a cup. In every hole the sea came
up, Till it could come no more.
7Poetry helps us learn and remember!! Rhyming
words and rhythm make poetry easy to learn and
remember. (Think of your ABCs!) My bologna has
a first name. Its O-S-C-A-R. My bologna has a
second name. Its M-A-Y-E-R. Oh, I love to eat it
every day, And if you ask my why, Ill
say. Cause Oscar Mayer has a way With
B-O-L-O-G-N-A.

9 Poets often try to help us see everyday things
in new ways. Apple red ball ? These
comparisons make poems more fun to read. They
help us use our imaginations to see the world in
ways we never thought of before!
10Twinkle, twinkle, little star How I wonder what
you are! Up above the world so high, Like a
diamond in the sky.
11I have a rocket ship With shiny spokes and
chrome- And ten speeds I can change at will When
I blast off for home. I wear my helmet fastened
tight And lean into the wind, When we are
streaking through the starts Or up the driveways
bend.
12The old house complained to the wind. instead
of The old house creaked in the wind. The
tree held a birds nest in its arms. instead
of A birds nest was on a tree branch.

all stand still. When the wind blows You walk
away slow. White sheep, white sheep, Where do you
go?
14Some poems dont rhyme. Some poems dont have
rhyming words or rhythm. They use the meaning of
words and the way those words are placed on the
page to tell their stories.
15Mouse By Hilda Conkling Little Mouse in gray
velvet, Have you had a cheese-breakfast? There
are no crumbs on your coat, Did you use a
napkin? I wonder what you had to eat, And who
dresses you in gray velvet?
