Title: Penalties and Plagiarism

1
Within Standard English there are a number of
regional differences which tend to attract
attention. Standard Scottish English is by no
means exactly the same as Standard English
English, for example, and Standard American
English is in some ways even more different. The
differences include large numbers of well-known
vocabulary items, such as British lift, American
elevator. (Trudgill 2000 6)
  • Within Standard English there are lots of
    obvious regional differences. Standard Scottish
English is different from Standard English
English, and Standard American English is even
more different. Differences exist in vocabulary
items like British lift vs. American elevator.

Penalties and Plagiarism
  • CWA penalties
  • Plagiarism Penalties and implications
  • Why plagiarism is daft, bizarre and a waste of
    your time

3
CWA Deadlines
  • Deadline day and time

4
CWA Deadlines
  • Deadline day and time
  • All CWAs in the box are removed at the time of
the deadline (usually 2pm or 4pm)
  • Any work that arrives after that is given an
    automatic 10 mark penalty
  • Unless its over a week late, when it receives a
    mark of zero

5
What is plagiarism?
  • Cheating
  • the unacknowledged use of someone elses work,
usually in coursework, and passing it off as if
    it were his/her own.

6
What is plagiarism?
  • collusion, where a piece of work prepared by a
group is represented as if it were the students
    own
  • duplication of the same or almost identical work
    for more than one module

7
What is plagiarism?
  • the act of copying or paraphrasing a paper from a
source text, whether in manuscript, printed or
    electronic form, without appropriate
    acknowledgement
  • submission of another students work, whether
with or without that students knowledge or
    consent.

8
Penalties
  • First offence
  • Major First Offence
  • Second Offence
  • Third/Fourth Offence
  • Part One
  • Part Two

10
Penalties
  • First Major Offence

work from fellow student, submitting same work

Penalties
  • Second Offence

    acknowledgement, poor referencing, inappropriate
    citations

work from fellow student, submitting same work
    for 2 modules
  • Standing Academic Committee
  • Recorded on file

What you do
What happens to you if first offence was in Part 2
14
Penalties
  • Standing Academic Committee
  • award zero for work in question
  • award zero for whole coursework
  • award zero for module
  • Award zero and drop your degree by a class (2.i
    to 2.ii, 2.ii to 3)
  • exclusion from University

15
Why its stupid anyway
  • Apart from the fact that
  • it will have a significant impact on your mark
  • It will go on your permanent record and could be
    divulged in references
  • It could get you dropped a degree class
  • or excluded from the University

16
Why its stupid anyway
  • Its ridiculously easy to spot
  • The marker will have read the books
  • And the marker will have marked lots of other
    essays too

17
Why its stupid anyway
18
Why its stupid anyway
  • If youve found the sources anyway, it doesnt
make any sense to get kicked off the course for
your efforts. Just adding the reference will
    improve your mark

  • When discussing the different kinds of Standard
    English, Trudgill (2000) notes differences
    between Standard Scottish English, Standard
American English and Standard English English. He
states that the differences include large
numbers of well-known vocabulary items, such as
British lift, American elevator (Trudgill 2000
    6).

21
Why its stupid anyway
  • Essays with whole chunks from elsewhere are never
any good anyway even if the plagiarised bits
    are ignored by the marker
  • Copying from other sources makes it hard to end
    up with a coherent essay

22
Why its stupid anyway
  • Most of the effort is in finding suitable
    information
  • Using it and referencing properly will get you
    good marks
  • Using it and not acknowledging it will get you
    thrown out of University

23
And thats why plagiarism doesnt make any sense
