Current market for ITNs in Africa

• Roll Back Malaria estimates the annual need for
  nets and treatment kits in Africa to be as high
  as 32,000,000
• Currently the production capacity of net
  manufacturers in Africa is estimated to be around
  6,000,000 per year
• Requirements could be met if a sufficiently large
  market is created to encourage further private
  sector investment for expansion of production and
  supply in Africa

UNICEF Procurement Supply

• UNICEF is a major purchaser of ITNs, insecticide
  and other health and medical supplies, worldwide
  and within Africa
• UNICEF supplies ITNs and Insecticides to the
  country programmes to stimulate demand for ITNs
  to a level where private sector involvement
  becomes an attractive proposition
• UNICEF is working with partners to stimulate
  demand and encourage private sector investment in
  the potentially significant African market for
  ITNs

African region

• In the long-term UNICEFs, with other RBM
  partners, objective is to establish a sustainable
  availability of ITNs in the areas of endemic
  Malaria through
• Creation of sufficiently large markets for the
  commercial sector to benefit from economics of
  scale.
• Work with partners to create a demand for for
  nets by buying large quantities for country
  programmes, promoting ITN use and thus creating a
  market.

Current market for ITNs Sub Saharan African
region

• In the medium-term UNICEF intends to stimulate
  the market through
• Establishment of arrangements with existing and
  newly established manufacturers or suppliers for
  the direct ordering of nets and insecticide so
  that UNICEF country programmess and partners can
  place orders directly.
• Engaging the private sector in the RBM initiative
  which is opening up markets for ITNs by creating
  the necessary business incentives so that
  production quantity and quality can be achieved
  whilst keeping prices to a minimum.

Current market for ITNs in Sub Saharan African

• In the short-term UNICEF intends to make ITNs
  Insecticides available through
• bulk ordering and the use of central procurement.
• Identification of new sources of supply in the
  region to improve efficiency of procurement.
• Advocate for removal of taxes and tariffs on nets
  and netting materials in accordance with the
  Abuja Declaration.
• Obtain approval and registration of all WHOPES
  approved insecticides in all countries, to ensure
  fair competition.
• Work with partner organisations, e.g. EU and
  UNIDO to encourage private sector investment in
  local net production in Malaria endemic
  countries.

Food for Thought

• Given the fact that Insecticide Treated Nets
  these days cost about USD 2.5-3 each one could
  compare that with
• A couple of packs of Cigarettes
• Three to four bottles of beer
• A shot of whisky with soda
• The latter commodities only last for some
  minutes, days and cause damage to health while
  ITNs have the potential of protecting vulnerable
  people for as long as five years!!!!
