Title: Center for Educational Technologies

1
Center for Educational Technologies (CET)
  • To enhance lifelong learning and teaching through
    the effective use of technology.

2
CETs GIS Mission Statement
  • To increase opportunities for students and
teachers to learn about and use geospatial
technologies within the context of existing K-12
    goals and standards.

3
Top 3 geospatial accomplishments this past year
  • CET strengthened its GIS presence to meet the
demands of Mine Impoundment Location and Warning
    System project.
  • Satisfied most of the requirements of the project
    including geospatial database, prototype module
for the centers Exploring the Environment online
    learning program, and prototype ArcIMS
    interactive mapping website.
  • Provided GIS/remote sensing support to Wheeling
    Jesuit Universitys Biology Department for
impoundment site visits and also created an
ArcIMS application to help the department locate
    inactive and/or unregulated coal impoundments.

4
Top 3 geospatial goals for the coming year
  • Complete remaining requirements of the Mine
    Location and Warning System project.
  • Incorporate ArcIMS applications to supplement
    existing Exploring the Environment products.
  • Develop and implement a plan to create a center
for geospatial studies at the CET. Rather than
teaching GIS, the centers focus will be to teach
with GIS, using a problem-based learning strategy.

5
Geospatial data
  • Evacuation/Inundation areas and points
(roadblocks, evacuation centers, etc.) in the
form of ArcGIS shapefiles digitized from
emergency action plans submitted by coal
companies to the West Virginia Department of
    Environmental Protection.

How can you benefit from the CET?
  • Once completed, coal impoundment GIS data will be
    available to interested agencies.
  • Currently, educators can access our Exploring the
Environment modules, most of which, incorporate
remote sensing and Earth system science
    education.
