IBOS MISSION STATEMENT
  • The International Baccalaureate Organization aims
    to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring
    young people who help to create a better and more
    peaceful world through intercultural
    understanding and respect.
  • To this end the IBO works with schools,
    governments and international organizations to

From Ideals to Reality What is the IB?
  • A membership organization, begun in mid-1960s
    within the international school community has
    grown to over 1500 participating schools in 121
    countries around the world.

    educational services.

  • The Extended Essay - a 4000 word piece of
    original research on a topic chosen by the

  • The Creativity, Action and Service Program a
    minimum of 150 hours of participation in creative
    programs, athletics or other physical activities
    and community service.

  • Many IB courses are offered at two levels
  • Higher Level (HL) Two-year courses of
    significant breadth and depth (approximately
    equivalent to first-year college courses).
  • Standard Level (SL) One- or two-year courses,
    less broad and deep than HL courses, but still of
    an advanced nature.
  • Students are required to complete all required IB
    assessments and to take the IB examination at the
    end of each IB course.

The official years for participation in the IB
Diploma scheme courses are Grades 11 and 12.
Pre-IB courses and sequences for Grade 10
provide a more consistent preparation for the
nature and rigor of IB courses in Grades 11 and
12.

The IBDP at SYDNEY ACADEMY
  • Began its official affiliation with IBO in 1986
    by starting the implementation process of the IB
    Diploma Program.
  • Completed its first IB examination session in
    1987and graduated its first full IB Diploma
    candidates in the 1999-2000 school year.
  • Has developed Pre-IB course sequences in 10
    which lead to a full array of courses within the
    IB Diploma curriculum scheme offered to Grades 11
    and 12.

  • Has provided options and flexibility for college
    preparatory students
  • Students can opt to pursue a
    comprehensivepreparation package by completing
    all the requirements of the full IB Diploma.

    successfully completed.

To Earn the IB Diploma
  • Complete Extended Essay, TOK, and CAS
  • Complete all internally assessed work required by
    IB
  • Take all six IB courses, three at the higher
    level and all six exams
  • Achieve a cumulative score of 24 (IB exams are
    scored on a scale of 1 to 7).

To Earn IB Certificates
  • Take as many or as few IB courses as fit your
    needs/strategies
  • Complete all internally assessed work required by
    IB in each IB course
  • Complete each IB course and take the IB exam in
    that course.

    and spoken in all subject groups.

As students and parents approach Grade 10, they
should become more familiar with the Pre-IB and
IB course sequences as outlined in the Course of
Studies Booklet. Students desiring to keep their
options open to pursue the full IB Diploma should
follow as many of the recommended course
sequences as possible.

Pre-IB courses in 10, they should be asking two
important questions1. Should I pursue the
whole package of the IB Diploma
schedule?2. Should I mix and match IB courses
with academic courses for the most

The IB Diploma and the Nova Scotia High School
Diploma
  • Students who earn the IB Diploma are also awarded
    the NS High School Graduation Diploma.
    Eligible
    students may also earn the IB French Bilingual
    Diploma.

    literate, articulate, and confident young adults
    with an understanding of global issues and other
    cultures.

If you are presently in a pre-Diploma schedule
(grade 10 year), then the IB coordinator will be
meeting with you this coming April and May to
help you strategize about your senior high years
within the IB Diploma curriculum scheme.

If you are planning to continue on in the full
Diploma program, we will tentatively set your
schedule based on your academic strengths and
interests. If you are planning to take IB
courses for individual Certificates, we will
discuss all of your options in doing so.
